Welp, my desktop crapped out on me last saturday after 4 years (95% uptime). So I went out and bought this baby. WOW. I'm in love. Now I just need to convert all my old internal drives to firewire for access and I will be back in the game!

I just got another 512mb of ram (up to 1024mb now) for my laptop today. Looks like I'll be playing some Warcraft III when I get back from Rausch Creek on Sunday.

Man, they really have improved WinXP since the haydays when I opted to KEEP WinME ( I know, I know). Oh yeah, DOOM 3 is off the chain! I've had the friggin game since it came out but could never play it because of gay old WinME. Now, for you other laptop owners, what goodies should I buy? Things I should know to do/not to do?

what goodies should I buy?

Docking station. I'd go crazy if I had to put up with a 15.4" display, laptop keyboard, and a bullshit pointing device on my main computer.

Laptops are nice for sitting on the couch and hooking up to the wireless though!

Well, I can't get the wireless to work at the moment (i will continue to try throughout the weekend though). I bought an access point and a box for one hard drive tonight. While i was shopping, I noticed that that they make a device to remotely hook up drives over a network, which is what im going to do. That way I can access the drives anywhere. Now if I could only figure out how to get the wireless to work....

Welp, I just found out what was wrong with the desktop. Bad C drive. Is there a way to recover my data with spending as little $$ as possible? The data isn't important, but it will save a lot of time.

How bad is bad? It could be as simple as hooking it up as a slave on the IDE chain (or as master on the secondary IDE) and pulling data off it; I've done that with quite a few "dead" HDDs before

Well, I don't know whats wrong, but when it begins to run, it clicks like it is rebooting. Doesn't stop. I've tried running it in an external usb drive and it won't read.....

Hook it back up through USB, and try turning the drive to different orientations to see if one of them will free up the mechanism. If that works, be ready to get the data off in a hurry.

HTH,

oooff...that drives going dead - you're probably hearing the heads whacking the side of the case (sort of a lightly metallic 'ping' noise?). If you can get the drive to run again get that data off as quickly as you can. You can take the drive apart when you're done though and get some wickedly strong magnets! :D

I will give that a shot. I'm not at a huge loss if I can't get it to work, but it will be 40 gig's of junk (over 4 years) of stuff I will have to refind.
