the compressor on my '90 is packing it in. rather than grabbing another one from a '90, what can I upgrade to thats a bolt-on? something I can use the new type of refrigerant in. also maybe more efficient with less horsepower required to run it.

The compressor that is in your Jeep is a pretty good one. You dont really need to put a different compressor on it. You can buy a replacement compressor and convert it to R-134A. Its nothing more than putting new fittings on the compressor where you charge it. The kits are fairly cheap with all new o-rings.

I've changed over quite a few rigs. I vacuum them down, put in the new oil stabilizer and charge with R134. They say you get less cooling with the new gas but I haven't seen an noticable difference.
