Michael,
I have read that mustang 5.0 injectors work in the non-HO engine but I was not willing to experiment. People say the mustang has a different spray angle but not knowing what the engineers wanted.
A coworker has a family member who rebuilds injectors. The coworker was saying swapping injectors is not as simple as it appears. The coils in the injectors have difference resistance/impedenaces and may cause problems. If you know of an injector rebuilder you may want to contact them and ask what options you have.
I found the replacement injectors for my 88 XJ 4.0 and installed them. I found the best price at the time at rockauto.com but you should check around.
If you change the injectors you might as well replace the regulator while you have it apart.
Also if you disconnect the fuel lines you will need a fuel line coupling repair kit. You can get these at the Jeep dealer. Be prepared to pay $15 each. My factory fuel injection manual says those couplings are one time use. For me with fuel and the chance of fire I am willing to spend $30 to make sure my XJ does not burn up.

The Ford injectors work just fine. My stock injectors started to leak and I got a set of Ford injectors at the junk yard and had put over 50K miles on them when I sold my XJ. I did run better after the swap, but my stock injectors were in such bad shape that anything would have felt better. Other people that I have talked to have reported that their engines run better with the Ford injectors.
The Jeep injectors are rated at something like 19.6 or 19.8. The Fords are rated at 19 but at a lower pressure, and when you factor in the higher fuel pressure in your Jeep they work out to just over 20lbs. The impedance is the same between the Jeep and Ford injectors.
Definitely get the coupling "repair" kits. Shop around - one local dealer wanted $18 each, and another sold them for $12. Get 2 kits.

There's really no need to disconnect the fuel line disconnects if you don't want to. I put some slightly used Ford injectors on my '89 and have been very happy with them. I paid less than $40 for 8 of them on ebay. I flushed Berryman B12 through them both backwards and forwards before installing them. You have to energize the injectors to do this. Fresh o-rings are a must and they will need some lubricant to aid in installing the injectors.

the non-HO injectors flow 18.6 lb/hr and mustang 5.0 injectors flow 19.0 lb/hr so the difference is minimal. The big diference between the two is the stock injector is a single port injector while the ford's are a 4 port design so fuel atomization is much better. The impedance and connectors and fit are the same between the two so no problems there.

Checkout fiveomotorsports.com ,but pay attention they have both take offs and new listed.Mine definately needed new ones so performance is hard to measure for me,runs great now.My sons 98'dodge ram 1500 w/3.9l v-6 runs the same as jeeps also,as you will see on this site some injectors are pretty much universal to other manufactures.

The Ford injectors are very compatible and do work well -- there are several versons of the same flow rate though - Many of the FoMoCo OEM injectors use a single pintle design where the MotorSport design in the 4-pintle look - the spray pattern on both is more "fan" shaped than "cone" (like the early XJ Bosh's) - something to consider for the atomization.
Dino Savva (often found on JeepsUnlimited in the Speed Freaks board) has gathered and presents some good information if you'd like stuff to read.
