Stripped Wheel Stud

Yesterday I had my wheels of the Jeep for the first time and when I went to put the lug nuts back on...one wouldn't go on....the inside of the lug nut was stripping out. It would seem that the previous owner had cross threaded it.


What's the best way to fix this?

What size thread/pitch is the stud?

I think you'll find them to be 1/2" - 20. You might have to pop in a new stud.

If it's only the lug nut that's stripped, the answer is easy -- buy a new lug nut. Where I live, Pep Boys has exact matches for the factory lug nuts for a couple of bucks each -- much cheaper than dealer price.

As Jay noted, if the stud itself is stripped you'll have to knock it out and replace it. This was discussed in a recent thread.
