Bought it this morning...
Think it's an 8.8 from an F-150...
pattern is 5 x 5.5...WMS is about 64"...ratio is 4.10... turning by hand, both drums turn same direction-limited slip? Perches over axle...
only numbers are cast on housing "10" "2127" "FOTW-4025-AA"

Bought it sight unseen hoping it would've been an explorer axle, but it's a bit wider and diff bolt pattern...

option 1) Might as well leave it as is and go full width and find a front HP44 with same pattern (what's a good donor?)

option 2) aftermarket shafts at 5 x 4.5 which means running a wider rear against a turd

option 3) narrow

Options 2 & 3 are more for amusement than anything else, the axle will eventually turn 35's/37's on 4.88's so I guess I found an excuse to build a front 44 :)http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v465/bullycatz/jeep/DSCF0016.jpg

p.s. the ghetto blocks and leaf packs will be donated to the MWC boneyard ;)

Its an 8.8 for sure. Can't tell you much after that. You might wanna pull the shafts and see what spline. If it is 28 (most likely) it is probably not worth running. Get a 9" from a fullsize bronco. Much stouter IMO------Kyle

I thought all F-150's had 31 splines...
'stangs and rangers had 28 splines...
too wide for a ranger and mounts wrong for a 'stang :dunno:

if I keep it, I'll get some disc brakes from the junkyard and truss it and weld it like Kid4Lyf did... Go Go Mudzilla!

if its a 28 spline, its not worth the swap specially with the C-clip and the drum brakes. you would put more money into it by getting alloy shafts, locker, disks, etc..

For the $50 bucks I paid for it, if it's a 28 spline, I'll use it to tie-out my dog :)

Gotta ask - WTF is up with the belts on your tow hitch?

Gotta ask - WTF is up with the belts on your tow hitch?

Spiked dog collars... some of my female friends like to wear 'em

Adds two more seats to the Cherokee, huh? 2 in front, 3 in back, 2 more on the hitch..."seats 7" :D

A high pinion D44 from a F-150 or 78-79 Bonco would match that nicely... but then again, you could get a 9" from the same vehicle.

model Year Pattern brake spline count:
Bronco 83-96 5-5.5 drum 31
F150 81-96 5-5.5 drum 31

I bet the Ford Explorer 96-02 8.8 disk brakes would be an easy swap.

Worth $50

ya did good 50.00 for a 31 spline 8.8 someof these guys paid 350.00 or more for their 8.8 exploder axle.

There is a tone of stuff available for this axle even more than with the exploder unit.

go find yourself a full width HP 44 front and call it good!

Sources say it's a direct swap :)

I gotta say...the tubes on this thing dwarf the 35c. They'll look nicer with some welds on them.

Thats definately a good find. Nevermind the naysayers. The fact is there are very few full-size truck axles that weren't stronger than the stock XJ gear. Besides, going full width is the cool thing to do, everbodies doing it!

All I can say now is go for it. 31 spline is plenty tough. Disc brakes would be a huge plus.------Kyle
