I was driving my '87 4.0 on the highway at about 75 MPH last night. All of a sudden there is (acrid smelling) smoke coming out from around the area of the transmission tunnel. The smoke goes away pretty quickly. I checked the temp guage (normal), oil pressure (normal) amps (13 or so). I pulled over and looked under the hood, the belt was still in place, the engine sounded fine.

When I got home I realized the power door-locks and power seats were not working. The fuses, fuse-block, and all wires under the seat look fine.

Is there a fusible link in this car that would have caused this? If so, where is it? If not, does anybody have any idea what else this may be?

Dave

P.S. - F.Y.I. - Doing 75 in the left lane during rush hour and having your car start to fill with smoke gets your attention like not much else can!

to the best of my knowledge there was a 30 amp. circuit breaker....fuse #11 on fuse board for the seats and windows on XJ's from 85 thru 89.

As for the 75mph in the left lane at rush hour, and having the cab fill up with smoke.......well that's your falut......you should have had the window open to suck out the smoke...lol

You were right about the circut breaker. When I pulled it out it was red hot. Now all I have to do is figure out why all this happened.
Good point on rolling down the window! Gotta remember that next time. LOL

Thanks for the help.

Just a quick update... After checking the wiring I found the the initial problem was caused by some cracked wires going to the power seats. The insulation had gotten brittle and the + and - wires eventually touched each other causing the cloud of smoke and for the breaker to trip.
If you have an older XJ with power seats you may want to check the condition of the wires.
