Hmmm, hope the volcano gods do not come after me for having a couple mason jars of ash from the 1980 eruption. :)

I know the Democrats are behind this. Curious timing with the debate coming up and all. :greensmok

Mount St. Helens Volcano Advisory (Alert Level Two)
September 29, 2004 10:40A.M., PDT

Over night, seismic activity at Mount St. Helens has accelerated significantly, which increases our level of concern that current unrest could culminate in an eruption. We are increasing the alert level to the second of three levels, which is similar to Color Code Orange of the alert system used by the Alaska Volcano Observatory and analogous totheNational Weather Service’s hazardwatch. Earthquakes are occurring at about four per minute. The largest events are approaching Magnitude 2.5 and they are becoming more frequent. All are still at shallow levels in and below the lava dome that grew in the crater between 1980 and 1986. This suggests that the ongoing intense earthquake activity has weakened the dome, increasing the likelihood ofexplosions or perhaps the extrusion of lava from the dome.

The cause and outcome of the accelerating unrest is uncertain. Explosions from the lava dome could occur suddenly and without further warning. During such explosions the dome and crater floor are at greatest risk from ballistic projectiles, but the rim of the crater and flanks of the volcano could also be at risk. Explosions would also be expected to produce ash clouds that rise several thousand feet above the crater rim and drift downwind. During today, wind forecasts from the National Weather Service, combined with eruption models, show that ash clouds will move in a southeasterly direction and could dust areas tens of miles or more from the volcano with ash. Landslides and debris flows from the crater that are large enough to reach the Pumice Plain are also possible. If the current unrest is being driven by a small slug of magma at shallow depth, extrusion of lava could also occur. At present there is no evidence that new gas-rich magma has ascended to shallow levels and could generate a large sustained eruption. But we are being especially vigilant to become aware of such evidence should it appear.

We continue to monitor the situation closely and will issue additional updates as warranted, whether activity escalates or returns to background levels.

Great...I have some too now i guess if it goes it won't be worth nearly as much...but then we could get some more REALLY neat ash sculptures and stuff.

But we can say this. Our VOLCANO is BIGGER than YOUR VOLCANO, and it WORKS!! :yelclap: :moon: :moon: :yelclap:

Heading to Glenn's if Rainier decides to follow suit. ;)

St. Helens isn't really in position to take out folks if it decides to go again. Winds are dead all over right now anyway, and last I checked the winds were moving South 5-10mph at an altitude of 10,000ft. Not a whole lot to worry about at this point.

Mount Saint Helens acting up, decent sized quake in Cali this week. I've got my fingers crossed. Don't forget your inflatable wings. :D

Things are startin to make me wonder. We just had another 6.0 earthquale here in san luis obispo yesterday and a 5.0 today. looking on the USGS web site I see theres been much activity along Ca. Maybe well end up a island after all.

hope helens doesnt to anything to major, hes pretty much my neighbor. im wondering if there is any correlation between the earthwuakes in ca and the volcano... probably not just odd timing i guess. never wheeled in ash. guess this will leave me a new experience! if it blows it gets me out of school as well

Hmm... My dad was stressing about this earlier. I remember being a child and it looking like snow outside, in Olympia. Just didn't know why I couldn't go out and play.

Now... I just purchased my Jeep a few weeks ago. I am coming up with an equipment list of things I need to do, install, and toss into the Jeep. Some are a given and cheap, some are expensive for the family road trips. But before there is a rush on breathing masks, where could I get one? I remember the little white ones like dentists use, but I want something a little nicer. Chances are if this thing blows I will be at work.

How would our Jeep's and their tires run in the ash? Just because a Volcano blows, doesn't mean people will stop going to casinos.

Look up dust masks on the internet. Or check local paint supply stores. Get one with a valve, if not a side canister and heavier duty straps that will allow you to breathe without dislodging the mask from your face. The ones I used in the coal mine made you sound and look like Darth Vader, but they work. The ones your dentist uses, help for bio hazards, but really isn't intended for dust of that magnitude. Kinda like solo sex...it's better than nothing, but all too soon...why bother? The mask needs to seal to your face. Pinching one on your nose isn't going to be good enough. Best of course, is a completly independant air source, but if you're that close to it, 10 or 15 minutes isn't gonna be enough, anyway :)

maybe even a prefilter that you could shake out every once in a while that you could place over the intake on the airbox? that might work fairly well. I imagine the ash won't affect the tire grip as long as you arent running a tire that is street only.

Tomorrow before I head off to work, I am unloading and reloading my Jeep. Currently filled with a new Lawn mower. Putting the tools and all extra parts I have collected over the last week in to my new toy. Gotta stop by Home depot to pick up some supplies that I have been putting off, but might come in handy if the mountain does blow.

Downfall, I just installed my K&N system last week.

Sorry, just kind of typing out loud.

Yeah, so far it is pretty minor, just as they predicted. It is either done, or taking a break.

Just glad to see there were no mud flows. Could have been pretty devastating in the middle of winter.

Yeah, it doesn't look like were going to get any ash or anything over here. It is projected to go toward pueget sound. They are saying a signifigant event is coming within 36 hours, and it's now at level three. Where are you at in Idaho Lincoln?
