My catalytic converter (or at least that is what I think it is, it is silver and has slots on the bottom and is inline w/ the exhaust) is making a rattling noise that is kind of loud. This is a 96 XJ with 70k on it. Just wondering what is wrong with it and how to fix it. Thanks

Take it back to the dealer and have it replaced. It is still under warrenty.Emission controls are covered till 80K.

I am not the original owner of the jeep (although I did buy it from the dealer and it had a 3 month warranty, but that is now expired), would that matter?

no because that emissions warranty last for the life of the Jeep no matter who owns it.
