front axle disconnects

I read a post that said a 94 axle doesn't use the vacuum disco, then what does it use? Do they have locking hubs? I did do a search on this and didn't find an answer.

It added weight and complexity, and was a weak point in the front drive. The original purpose was to save gas, but the savings were inconsequential.

Why would you need a selectable locker in the front? The rear doesn't have to be selectable and it goes around turns. If the front is non-disco as a 94 is, when you go around a turn the diff simply acts like the rear and the side bearings allow the shafts to turn at different speeds. If you put a non selectable up front it will definatly chirp and probably scrub when you turn but thats the price you pay for trail performance and a cheaper locker. Just learn how to drive it and it will be fine.

It's not a problem in 2 wheel drive since the axle shafts and driveshaft are effectively disconnected at the t-case. There is some clicking with an automatic locker but it's virtually undetectable in normal driving.
