View Full Version : What for exhausts?

What is everyone doing for an exhaust that sounds better and not like a rice burner. I already tried just cat and no muffler, but that sounds like a freaking ricer with a 4inch tip. I just hate not being able to hear the motor. So if anyone knows of a muffler that will give the 4liter a low rumly sound but not a GAY sound please give me a holler.

my gibson is super quiet inside and has a lower then stock. But its expensive and has to be modified to fit a hitch.

For sound or power?
Most run a Banks, Borla and other headers, hi flow cat and some kind of high performance muffler.
Personally I have a Flowmaster 40 from Rustys. Sounds good and not like a ricer.

I run a 30" glass pack, and a stock cat with the H.O. tube manifold, and 2.5" cat back. It is barely audible at idle and low rpms but when I step on it you know about it but, it's still not louder than the intake on my stroker.

Had a flowmaster put on monday, everything else is stock. UNless its it's my imaganation it seams to have a little more torque on the freeway and in town[2000 4.0]. It's a little loud for my taste,it just seams to have a droning wfect around 40/45mph. but I'm shure it will mellow out a bit as it gets some carbon deposits built up on the walls inside. btw was 115$ installed [welded too]a deseant price?

Had an Edelbrock on my XJ, sounded like a for real truck. Iīd crest the hill at about 60 MPH, coming into the valley at three in the morning and wake up all the cows. Didnīt sound like any ricer Iīve ever heard, more like a Frieghtliner with a Jake Brake. Had a nice rumble at idle. Finally got tired of the noise and put on a Dyno Max sounds OK and isnīt real expensive to replace, when it gets rock rash. And lets the cows and nieghbors get another few hours of sleep in the mornings.

i went with the flowmaster 40 when i did my new cat. its sounds great, no ricer crap. i think it even might have a little more torque.

Scooby, hate to burst that buble, but that will get LOUDER with time as it "burns" out.

Ask the muffler or Hi-Po shops.

but hey, buy then you will be used to it or have ripped it off on a rock anyway!

high flow cat, flowmaster 50 series deltaflow, and 2.5" pipes. Sounds great, not too loud and not anything close to ricerish

FM40. So tough, it doubles as it's own skid plate.

Well thanks, I put the muffler back on last night and I would highly recomend not taking it off, man it was obnoxious and ricerish. So today I took the cat off and am running just a muffler. I might get either a flowmaster or a borla catback. I really am hoping I get an insurance settlement soon(got hit on motorcycle and missed a good bit of work and has put me in a financial bind for the time). Keep the oinions coming

umm he said he got a flowmaster put on, dont flows use baffles to quieten the exhast instead of fiberglass? the sound waves wont bounce off the baffles in the muffler as well when it has some carbon on it, making the exhast a tiny bit quieter. in other words there is nothing to "burn out" like the fiberglass in a glasspack or other muffler does.

Yes that is how there made, and was thinking the same thing. But we could be wrong. If so I'll just have it put on my zj with the 318 if I grow tired of it.

someone asked about sound clips. I found some somewhere carsound.com I think. but remeber they wont sound the same if you dont know how loud they are. The flow master 40 is about 108db at idle and 118 at 2.5k that is plenty loud if you don't know.

I am well past my days of having a loud or droning exhaust. I have a Dynomax Hemi Turbo on my XJ, and I think it's perfect. You can't really hear it inside the cabin, but when you roll down the windows it is obvious that the exhaust is changed. It does not qualify me for a rice-racer discount at Pep-Boys either. I like my FI straight six and all, but if anyone is expecting it to sound like a big block Mopar by changing a muffler they are sadly mistaken. It is what it is. Most of the "high flow" stuff just sounds like crap when slapped on the Jeep.

Are the 40 Series a direct Bolt on with the stock tailpipe? Also, would a 40 series be legal in a MAryland inspection? I need an exhaust before I get it inspected and would rather not have to change back and forth just for the inspection. I've heard that Glasspacks are too loud for maryland.

a fm wont pass md inspection. just went through this last month when i sold my zj. they claimed it wasent "o.e. equivalent" (sp).
you can bolt them on but id recommend welding it. the flow is thick, thus a clamp is useless. went through this with my '88. clamp would never hold.

just replaced the FM 40 with a "stock" Midas muffler. its big and thin/not welded. as far as i can tell, there's no packing in it....just open tubes and a hollow chamber. anyway, welded all the seams. it sounds a lot better, but still has a low/deep sound.

I like the sound of a nice open element intake and stock exhaust. more motor than exhaust... and i dont wake the neighbors at 2AM when i get in. FM was cool back in HS, but i got tired of it.

I thought I read somewhere that 2000 and 2001's cats are from a Grand Cherokee's V8, so we don't need to be concerned about getting a hi-flow cat. But for the record... Flowmasters Delta Flow 50 series sounds really nice on my 2000.

The Dynomax muffler is my favorite i have heard flow master and gibson but i really like the dynomax its is quiet until you get on it.

Ditto on what he said...

FYI ... I replaced a FM40 2-chamber with the Super Turbo Dynomax (original Walker Corvair Turbo muffler) and would never go back. I ran that FM for about 4-5 years .. was fun at first, but that loud in-cab drone got real old after awhile.

You must be young and tolerant to own one ... I guarantee after you turn 40 you'll change your tune ... and muffler. Maybe that's why they call it the "40" series.

Install 2.5" from the collector all the way through the tailpipe and you should be fine .. and if you use the Dynomax you'll still hear a throaty low pitch tone except it's more outside than inside.

If you want to serve as a "test pilot" for the group install a Hooker Aero Chamber ... outperforms them all in the torque/HP ratings.

Good luck whatever you do.

I'm running Banks Stainless headers and a Dynomax Super Turbo exhuast and it sounds AND performs great! It gets better HP and mileage and sounds like a Chevy I used to drive. Nice and low tone! Next is the cat...
