You need a bunch of tools that add up to about $500 - 600 and a shop press. You will have to reset the gears for the housing. Also you will need new install kits. There is tons of info on here about this, but here are a few links to some info.

ok so its not just like i can replace the carrier. from what you make it sound is that it would be just like putting all new gears in...which i guess it is. I guess illl just have to swap axles...

Holy crap I dont know what tools you are buying but the tools I have to do gear setups are as follows
dial indicator with magnetic base- 40 bucks
big torqe wrench- 100 bucks
little torqe wrench with inch pound-50 bucks

where the hell are you getting 500-600 dollars and dont say shop press cause you dont have to have one to do it. Although it does make it easier if you have if you arent getting used gears.

Well you need a way to pull and press bearings without damaging them; so you will need a press or need to make many trips to a machine shop. Also you will need strong impact gun (maybe compressor), calipers, brass hammer, ball peen hammer, dead blow hammer, big breaker bar, pry bars, the stuff axjman mentioned and just other tools you may or may not have. So if you don't have a bunch of tools already you will end up spending a bunch on tools which is fine. I'd rather spend money on tools instead of labor.

you dont need a way to pull bearings or press them if you get used gears and carrier they usually have bearing on them I have pressed put bearing on with out presses, by putting the bearings in the oven and the carrier in the freezer they just easily tap on. Most of the stuff you listed is nice but not needed. Its just like saying that you need more than a cresent wrench to change a axle well you dont have to have more it just makes it MUCH more simple and easy.

I guess I will never do a gear install if I place a carrier in the freezer and the bearings in the oven my wife would shoot me or maybe I'll try it when shes not home.

:D

well if she doesnt want you to do that that is the perfect excuse to buy at press like I did. "well you dont want me to have to use the oven and freezer do you"

how long do the bearings last?? like how many miles before they need to be replaced?

i have a big torque wrench so i could do this with a smaller one and a magnetic dial indicater to check the backlash right?

so would you guys reccemend keeping my axles and just swapping the gears and carriers or swapping the whole axle from my old jeep to my new jeep and then putting my brakes and crap from my new one on the old axles?(my old jeep has bad brakes and my new one has good ones)

Well unless you have the proper bearing pullers you ruin the bearings anyway!
