My '93 XJ 4.0L HO started knockin' the other day. I stopped to fill 'er up and the pump had a GumOut dispenser attached to it so I bought a 4 oz dose of injector cleaner. It didn't make any difference. At the next fill up I though about trying it again but finally though to check the oil level instead. It was 1 quart low (my bad - I should stay on top of that given the amout of blow-by). I'm only 600 miles from the next oil change so 1 quart in 2,400 miles is not a disaster but topping it off did kill the knocking.
Moral: don't let that in-line 6 get low on oil.
