i have a 94 XJ, with the 8.25 rearend, powertrax no-slip in rear....31's on it for now but plan on 33's pretty soon. it's my daily driver so would 4.56's be too much of a jump or should i just go to the 4.11's? Also, would i have to change the locker? thanks for your help

i have the 8.25 in my 97 xj..i use the detriot full locker w/4.56 gears, and i love it...i have been wheeling this set up for 2 yrs now...iam running 33 boggers..havnt had any probs..if i were you i would go with the 4.56..no telling what future tire size you end up with..charles

do some searching and you will see that gear ratios with 33s has been debated endlessly here, and the debate is always between 4.56 and 4.88. I have personally had 4.10s and 4.88s with 33s and there is no comp`ris~j ar toðkow mucø#better`vhe 4.8øs are. °Kf hf rtclly is just between 4.56 and 4.10, then GET THE 4.56! If 4.88s are a posshbilèuy consider them, and dn*sole sôarchingn

4.56 without a question.

Get rid of the 8.25 and get something that you can put 4.88s in. In other words dana 44, 8.8 etc. 4.56s otherwise without a doubt.---Kyle

4.56. No question. With 33s your RPMs are around 2500 on the highway, which is beautiful, and still has plenty of grunt off-road.

Once again, Do the math.
4.56 gears with 33s is almost identical to stock 27" tires and 3.55 gears. 4.56 will give you back your stock OEM performance.

However, you're going to be pushing four heavier tires and usually a taller vehicle with more wind resistance. 4.56 in an auto with 32s is a great combo for me, but I'd go for 4.88s if I were to go 33s...but that's not an option with the 8.25"

I'm a big fan of the 4:11's

But in this application I would go with 4:56 no question.

Here's the rule:

4:10 for tires up to 31" max.

4:56 for tires 31" to 33"

4:88 (if you can get it) for larger tires or rock crawling applications.

Almost...you have to keep in mind the rolling resistance of heavier tires and more wind resistance due to a larger surface area of a lifted vehicle. I agree that mathematically it works, but realistically teh acceleration is not quite like stock. It's fairly close, but not quite. If I were to go any bigger than my 33s, i'd definitely go 4.88, but 4.56 works really nicelywith 33s.
