Did 44's come in the rear of the pioneers? I have a chance to get one cheap but I can't crawl under the thing yet. I can see from a distance but can't tell if it's a 35 or a 44. Any help would be aprectiated. Also what type of 5 spd tranny's and x-fer case's came in this model year?
Thanks,

84's had 35's only. The 44 was in 87 or so XJ's and not very many of them. The 5 speed is either a ax-5 or a t-5. But it is most likely tha ax-5. Anything else?

What type of transfer case might it have? Are these strong and worth a darn?

Transfer case with a 5-speed was probably an NP207. Not as strong as a 231, and low range was 2.6x:1 rather than 2.72:1. I heard somewhere that the 207 is essentially the same as the 231 except without the internal oil pump, but I have not compared them and don't know that to be correct.
