View Full Version : First regearing try...

After working my 'stock gears/one locker' angle to death, I decided to regear my rig myself.
I did a lot of reading, looked at a lot of pictures, and gave it a shot.
I finished the 44 today, and am happy with my first pattern.
Not so scary with the right (borrowed) tools and some phone tech.
These are 4.88s with a LockRight in my 44.

Backlash is .006, and pinion depth ended up .001 shallower than with the 3.55s that were in it at .071.
Used .030 shims on one side and .035 on the other, and then added .003 per side for preload.
I had to pull the carrier 4 times and the pinion 3 times before I was able to lose the setup bearings.
Zen and the art of not throwing tools through a wall.
Lot of sharp things to be found in a 44 housing when holding a heavy carrier covered in grease.
I am sore, tired, and need a beer.
Opinions welcomed.

Saturdays only, please. On sunday, he is in the house of the lord.

If you can spot a textbook pattern, then read that book and learn to do your own.

Looks good. if you were anal about it then you could add that .001'' back into the pinion. but i try tobe overly critical.

Sweet! If a bonehead like you can do gears like that it gives me hope that I can too.

Congratulations BC on your install ...
You're right about luck ... the only luck involved is in maintaining your patience. Enjoy the gears ...

Bg, whenever you're available come on down to Indiana to set, ah, I mean have a beer, yea, just come on down for a couple beers. It'll be fun, just us and the gears, I mean beers.

With that .001" added in, the pinion was a little 'loose' for my liking.
Granted, this is my first R&P, but it 'felt' better without that .001".
Thanks for the input, it is much appreciated.

INCORRECT.
Dollywood is the capital of tennesee.
A good, full contact pattern is shaped like the state of tennesee

Your a jerk! :DLearn how to spell. Poor spelling takes away from the insult by making you look like an idiot. It's "you're" not "your". As in "You're an illiterate bonehead." and "Where did you get your education, you ignorant jackass." http://home.swbell.net/rriojas3/1spankbottom.gif

I simply wanted to state that you sir are due, I realize that your hard work and skill is responsable for the success of this project. However...I am sure a fair amount of luck factored in.

Get back on topic? Why? First off, this is Bgcountry's thread so who gives a crap. Second, Bg has already recieved all the kudos he can handle. If he gets too many, he'll be even more impossible than he already is. Third, it's more fun to insult JnJ.
BTW,JnJ, you still suck. http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/images/smilies/thefinger.gif

Oh, you ment what is the redneck capitol of TN, and actually the correct answer would have been all of Sevier County (including Dollywood and "The Burg" (any eastTN redneck worth buck should know where that is))

FINISHED!
3 days straight in the garage, and the gears are in.
The 30 was tougher to get a good pattern on because I was tired and frustrated, but I filally got it with good preload and a backlash at just a hair under 7. You know you have spent a lot of time on gears when you can tell the difference between a .003" shim and an .005" shim without looking and covered in gear oil. Used 1/2 gallon of GoJo in the shower, and I am still dirty.
The axles are in, painted, and ready for fluid tomorrow.
Some alignment to do and some tires to mount and all is well.
Anyone know where to get alignment shims for the LCAs?
I know anyone can make them, but I dont want to, I'm tired.
2 axles stripped, painted, regeared, locked and installed.
I understand why this costs so much to have done, but I would do it again in a heartbeat.

:cheers:The only place I know of is at the dealer. They're not expensive. They are easy to make. GoJeep has the specs on his website. http://www.go.jeep-xj.info/HowtoAlignment.htm

AMEN to that. I paid over 600 to have my 410's put in a year or so ago, so when it came time for the 4.56's I spent 400 on tools and did my own. And since have been enlisted by the club I'm in to do several others. :banghead:
A lot of attention to detail, but I would do it again, Oh wait, 4.88's are in the garage waiting to go in now.
