How to tell if tie-rod ends are bad?

How do you tell if tie-rod ends are bad? I've had some play in my steering lately so I pulled the track bar, drag-link, and tie-rod off. The Teraflex track bar bushing is shot, so that is getting replaced. Anybody know if a stock bushing will fit? If not, I'll order one from Teraflex tomorrow, but I'd rather get one locally if possible. The other TRE's aren't wallowed out for the most part, but they are pretty loose compared to new ones. TIA.

a bad tre will have lateral play (rotation is ok)
