Well I'm going to break out a seemingly stupid question here. I took the Jeep to Midas for a brake test and they werent very helpful on the brakes but they told me my rear wheel bearings should be replaced. This is my question: Could the Midas man be able to tell by just looking at the rear wheels if my bearings need to be replaced? I know nothing about axles or bearings, so Im pretty much worthless in the subject. Thanks

No, because you have no rear wheel bearings. You have axle bearings which could be bad and he could tell that if he had the wheel off and played with the axle. But if you can't trust someone for brakes I sure wouldn't trust them on axles.

and you dont trust dealerships?. these shops dont make thier money selling you lifetime guarantee items. they make it by seling things that arent bad so you think something is fixed. if you never sensed a problem, then why try to fix it? did you fix the buzzing relay?

Leaking oil would only mean that your seal is bad not that the bearing is bad. I had a friend go to a local Midas and then call me to ask about what she was qouted. I told her to bring her car by and it turned out that they just wanted to make a quick buck...... Anyways, I wouldn't trust Midas, like I wouldn't trust AAMCO or quite a few other places (including few local dealerships)

I'll spare everyone the details, but I had a TERRIBLE experience with Midas and I would never go back.

me too. the "lifetime" brake pad warranty is not worth the paper it is printed on. my situation ended in me telling the service manager to shove the warranty papers up his @ss :D and telling every customer in there at the time that this place was lying to them about what really needed to be replace. :)
I had all 4 pads done like 4yrs ago on the ZJ (4 discs) before I really got into working on jeeps. the pads were gone but the rotors were fine, not warped/ect , gouged or really thin. I took it is for replacement pads, he says I need 4 rotors at $120 each because they are thin and "hardware kits" x4 i tell him he is full of it cause he would not give me the thickness #'s and the sugessted min thickness... and ZJ brakes dont need hardware kits... but I will play along and provide my own rotors (from autozone @$20 ea) and he installs his pads for free. He said they would not do that, I said fine just give me the %$#@% pads and I will replace them my self, idiot. He says he would need the old pads to replace them for me (not true, they just need the paperwork, i confirmed this thru midas directly). I called him a liar, he told me to leave. I HATE MIDAS. I left a complaint with midas corporate, they will probably send me a $10 off coupon on a brake job which I will probably burn with my warranty papers.

Midas does screw quite a few people I think but they do free diagnostics(although they arent worth a crap.) Anyway my grease seals are leaking so the bearings will have to be replaced as well. Damn! Thanks for the help.

If you see oil or grease on your drum or shoes the seal is gone and you might as well replace the bearings while you're down there.

YES. They have hired ALL of the PSYCHIC hotline operators that Dione Warwick and Ms. Cleo had to let go.
You should take it in and then demand that they show you the USED parts when their done. And before they start ask how they came to that ASS - UMPTION.

i dont even think they are equipped to replace the bearings, it requires a press to put the bearings on...
