first of all, i am just wonderingm what transfer case i might have...the jeep is an 88 cherokee pioneer with a 4L and AW4...the shifter indicator lists: 2WD, 4Wheel Part-Time, 4Wheel Full Time, and 4 Wheel Low. Also the jeep has been cranking up just fine, no problems at all. runs a little rough but cranks fine. i tried cranking it this morning but i got nothing. my accessories work great but when the key is turned all the way there is absolutely nothing, as if the starter just quit all of a sudden. i am going to try and run a wire from the starter to the battery and see if it will start that way. i know it could also be the ignition switch above the steering column. i am just wanting a few ideas of what else it may be. any help on the t-case or why it won't start is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

1. Transfer case with a full-time position is the NP242, also known as Selec-Trac
2. Start with the obvious -- pull the starter and take it to Auto Zone or Advance Auto to have it bench tested. The starter on my '88 died just that way. Worked perfectly, right up until the day it didn't work at all. That was at about 175,000 miles, IIRC.

Might try playing with the shifter...... you neutral safety switch may not be engaging

You have a 242 transfer case, Selec-Trac.
As for the second question... before doing anything else, jiggle the shifter a bit in park or try putting it in neutral. Sometimes the neutral safety switch gets all gunked up and/or worn out and won't allow the starter to turn over.
If that doesn't work, pull both terminals off of the battery and clean any corrosion buildup off with a wire brush or a battery terminal cleaning tool. Make sure the cable ends are nice and clean too, maybe even scrape the insides a bit with a knife or something. If there's too much corrosion build up on the terminals and the cables then the accessories may work but the starter isn't able to get enough juice to crank over.

well i tried to wiggle the shifter and i tried to clean the posts and terminals and neither worked so i decided to get under and run a wire from the starter to the battery and see if it would turn over. well when i got under there the bottom wire that attaches to the starter is a bare wire and it was touching the frame....i moved it away and the truck started just fine. thanks for all the suggestions.

You could also check the charge on the battery. When my 89 sits overnight, the battery loses its charge. There's enough juice to get the guages and everything working but not to turn over the engine. I end up jump starting it to get it running.

that was the first thing i checked...it was fine. all it was was that wire i was talking about above. thanks for the info though.
