I wanted to get a project rig for cheap so i could beat the hell out of it on the trail and not worry bout having to drive it every day. Was thinking of going with an XJ (hopefully a 900 or less) then putting a 4.5-5.5" lift and tires on. Any tips on what to look for in a used XJ and what kind of lift i should get? would it be cheaper to get a 3.5" lift and do a shackle and spacer to net 4.5"? Any help i would greatly appreciate! thanks in advance.

For starters, what kind of wheeling do you do? For a year, I would do '91 and up as they have the high output engine. It is easier to find aftermarket performace upgrades for them. For a hardcore wheeler, I personally like the 2 door so you can cut more out of the rear fenders. Color, it's up to you.... but I hear lime green (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=272244&highlight=green+buggy+ricer) is all the rage now. The most common lift around here is an RE lift. Yes it would be cheaper to get the spacers, but they do wear out, so I would fork over the little extra money for the full lift. Your axles are going to need more work, like gears and lockers. You will also need longer driveshafts, and umm a lot more stuff. But that should get you started.

yeah JJ its me - adam - aka quivvy from L.O.S.T im hopefully getting a cheap XJ toy.
As for my uses... it will be wheeled rather hard. im talkin bout what will i need at first to just get all started and set up? hopefully i can hit some trails with a lift and tires. forget rock rails and stuff - this things gunna get trashed. i have a rustys lift on my KJ and love it, but i hear they dont make a good product for the XJ is that right? the price is right.... also how much would you call reasonable to spend on a 91 or up to beat up?
