Above is the original thread for those that want the reference.

Took the XJ to a mecahnic buddy and it was determined that there was a high spot on the ring gear.

Replaced the ring and pinion, axleshafts, wheel bearings and rebuilt the axle basically. The noise is gone, but we also found that there was a bearing going in the t-case, and has since gone, judging by the amount of fluid flung around the tail cone area.

So, the noise is fixed, save the minor noise from the t-case. Thanks for all the help.

is fluid being flung from the tail-cone a sign of a bearing going bad? mine leaks a bit, not too bad but enough to keep the undercarriage around it damp.
More likely just a bad seal wich is pretty easy to r & r.

If you are running a slip yoke setup, and can grab the front universal on the rear shaft and it will wiggle where it goes into the xfer case, you most likely have a bad babbit type bearing in the tailcone assembly. A new seal will help, but if the shaft is moving the new seal will not last. This is a commonly overlooked problem with xfer case leaks.

[stoner voice]Hey man....this isn't your thread dude[/stoner voice]

When we figured out the case was bad, we could hear a slight noise of something dropping, like a bearing, when we rotated the driveshaft with the wheels off of the ground. You could actually hear the bearing, or whatever it is, fall as we moved the shaft.

Now, we we had diagnosed this, there was no fluid leakage around the case, just the bearing noise. That was a week ago. Yesterday when we were under there, there was fluid all around the case. And to boot, when the slip yoke pulled out of the case, no fluid came gushing out, so I know the seal is gone, as well as the bearinng.

We are taking it apart this afternoon to see what needs to be done, and will go from there.
