Burned out brake light bulb on the wife,s 98,simple replacement ?Check owners manual ,#2057 bulb,have spare under seat in my 96.
Pull light assm off jeep No match???
Had to run to town took burned out bulb,Bulb was a #3157 of which there were several different types.Got the long Life Kryptnite verson.

I went thru the same ordeal the other day. That 2057 would not twist-n-lock into the socket. I used a 1156(?) instead. Seems to have worked. I'm wondering if the previous owner had replaced the socket.
 
Don't know if your are the same as european ones but did you look at the bayonets on the bulb? If the bulb has combined stop/tail light elements then the bayonet pins are offset and the bulb only goes in 1 way.
