t-case 242 vs 231

my wife fried her t-case 242 in 4liter auto trans 242 t-case 1991 xj. my question is can i use a 231 instead of the 242 and will there be any problems that i will have to get around? thanks xj in indiana

it should be an easy swap.. just have to re-adjust the shift linkage.. just make sure the t/case input shaft has the same spline-count... IIRC you 91 should have a 23-spline but i am NOT POSITIVE on that.. ima lil foggy on the year it was changed.... older units wil have a 21-spline..

With the AW4 the spline change was 87-90 21 spline input and 91-up 23 spline but also be aware that there are also long (AX's) and short (AW4) input gears.
