I thought my Jeep was a gonner today... I was about 50 miles from home, stopped at a busy intersection. XJ died and a huge billow of white smoke came up through the hood vents. Tried to restart, lurching forward. Then tried to shift-NO GO, Oh my GOD this Puke-Goat tranny has locked up on me!!! Pushed in the clutch to try another restart, No Pedal!! Pumped it a few times, managed to restart and get it to a parking lot. The master cylinder was almost empty, and fluid on the ground. I managed to refill the MC, and drive home only to find bumper to bumper traffic on the bridges to the Cape. Somehow, with almost no pedal I made it home. Now I have to wait for a new line from NAPA to get it running again. Lucky to have made it home!!

What let go, the line between the master cylinder and the slave? The same thing happened to me as I exited the MA Tpke at I-290 last autumn on my way to the NAC campout and trail ride in Maine. I drove it all the way from Worcester back to my home on the west side of New Haven w/o clutch. Not "fun," but it is possible.

And on a friday going out to the cape you expected .....what, no traffic...yea, right...the day I see that I'll go buy a lottery ticket. When we go up there on vacation we cross the canal on Thursday nite, late and go home on a tues...

Yes it was the line, I have to order another first thing Saturday. As far as the traffic goes... I have learned to live with it, and had I a working clutch, been fat dumb and happy sitting in traffic. Today, no such luck. So I sat in the old Jeep, pulling it into neutral and cursing at the people opposed to the bridge flyover. Hey Eagle, it just dawned on me: Is your avatar of the units assigned to theatre in Vietnam??

Yes, it is. A couple of places sell a flag showing the units, and I just cribbed a pic of the flag from one of their web sites. My unit was the 4th Infantry (Ivy) Division.
