My girlfriend's XJ (1996 2.5 5sp; assume AX5?) has a henious squeal when the clutch is in. I would say most definatly it's the throwout bearing.

What am I in for? Im guessing droping the transmission is in order. Time to get that transmission jack?

AX15, not an AX5. AX5's were only used behind 4 bangers.

Get a jack, and drop the trans. Put a new clutch in while you're at it.

Thanks ChiXJeff. It is 4 banger; 2.5liter. It has a 130k coupled with the fact that lots of smoke was generated from her learning the manual trans, so a new clutch probablly wouldn't be a bad idea.

After the trans is dropped, pretty simple? Whats a ballbpark figure for parts?

Oops... should have seen the 2.5.

Autozone claims to have a clutch set for $140, and a second for $190. Consider replacing the pilot bushing as well.

If she's scorched the clutch, you *REALLY* want to make sure the flywheel is in good shape. Unfortunately, a: the FSM says they aren't resurfaceable, and b: the only place I found a replacement was the dealership.
