my daughter's '99 XJ will start in "Park" first thing. After being run awhile and then stopped it won't start again. But, put it in "Neutral" it starts promptly. Any ideas? TIA, Danno

It sounds like the Neutral Safety Switch (NSS Ghost mentioned). it is a really common problem on XJ's. Do a search and you will find links to articles on how to clean it, etc.

My 1999 has the same problem. It only comes up about twice a year so I just live with it. I just keep a screw driver in the back so I can jump the starter so it doesn't strand me of it acts up at an inconvenient time.
