i am looking into buying a 97xj 4.0l 5 speed with 51000 miles. is there anything in particular i need to check for, where there any particular problems or recalls with 97s

I'm not aware of any particular problems with the '97. I used to have a bookmark for the NHTSA web site that would let you check for recalls. That seems to have bitten the dust with the previous computer, but you should be able to find the NHTSA web site with a search or, if that fails, through www.firstgov.com
