An interesting failure

I was working on my stepson's 93 today, and noticed a little seepage at the heater control valve. Didn't think much of it, and did some other work, including a new lower radiator hose, and topped up the coolant. Started it up, and the heater control valve blew apart. When I looked, it appeared that the plastic had turned soft and crumbly. You could tear it apart with your fingers. Just wondering if anyone else had had this happen.

Yep,
Replaced the one in my '91 with a Junkyard valve from a caravan. The only one that was not broken/cracked. The only diff was the bottom hose direction was off by a bit, but it's still working.
