what model xj's, '97 and newer came with abs? did the '97 sport? or was it an option package for all models?

As far as i know.....
Seemed to be an option on all. I know when looking for a Jeep, mostly even the Sports (because i wanted a 5-spd), had a dickens finding one without ABS. Do not need that small benefit, and the complexity is no good in my book. Little did i know that meant it would come with the larger and stronger 8.25 where if had ABS would have the D35.

ABS might have been standard on the Limited in the years when that model was sold, but I think it was optional in all models. I have a 2000 Classic w/o ABS so I know it was optional there, and I know it was only an option in the Sports for 2000.
