We had a blast! We cancelled Kane Creek, with a 2 day rain in place, and more on the way, we figured if we wanted to surf, we'd move to the coast, instead of waiting for California to fall into the ocean. So instead, we did Hell's Revenge, me riding shotgun with Popeye in his green jeep. I earned 'most optimistic spotter' with 'Yer doing good, great, perfect..WHAM! Crunch!...'we can fix that' kay, yer doing great, perfect..'
Then Todd and Julie used the kid proof locks so I couldn't get out of the Limo when we went up Hell's Gate near dark (2nd trip, we ran back up there that afternoon so Xjeeper could hit it again, after a Ujoint gave out after only 15 years..just don't make 'em like they used to...)
Next day, Poison Spider/Golden spike...anyway, after I awake from the dead, I'll try posting some pics. Others went on Cliffhanger and..someotherdamned place, I forget. So, they can report on that. But if you missed it, maaaaaan we got some great people... I've got pics of red rocks and red rocks with jeeps, so..doesn't get any better than that.

Glad you made it back OK. I know I'm going to be sorry I missed it when you all start posting in the next couple of days.
JR got any ideas for getting your junk going? I was going to stop by on Saturday but I sold my '85 Waggy and had to get home to help the guy put it on the trailer.
Get the pics up I'm anxiously awaiting.

is Hell's Gate open again?
Yep. If there was any doubt about a trail, we called the Sheriff's dept and asked. Was kinda funny watching Xjeeper on the cell phone, going "Hello? No, this is not an emergency, but can you tell me...."
We also did the Tread Lightly thing as best we could, and brought out some beer cans left over from EJS...

is Hell's Gate open again?
Yes, HG and Escalator are both open......for now. They are under review and I'm attempting to gather more intelligence on these obstacles. There were Stay on Marked Routes BLM signs in place on Hell's Gate and Escalator, so I called the Grand Co Sheriff's Dept from the Overlook parking area for an official ruling before we ran HG. They verified both obstacle as open until further notice.
Then I proceeded to toss a right front ujoint at the last ledge on top of HG.......Alex thinks that he's a jinx because he was riding shotgun....last time he rode with me, we made it 3/4 of the way up when I realized that I was still in 2Low.......
The yokes weren't harmed and so I pulled the shaft, siliconed a juice bottle top in the tube and ran the rest of the trail in 2 Low and fixed it in town. 7 years of Moab wheeling on a Disco D30 with 260 joints......that's my first ujoint break, not too bad.
We ran out to HG later that night and ran it again at dusk......great fun!!

Dangit Jeff, I'll never try Hell's Gate if you continue scaring the crap out of me on it! :D John made it look easy despite 3.07 gears and a stick shift.

Escalator was another story entirely.

Did anybody mention that the trails were unusually wet? I've never seen a lake on Hell's Revenge before! I couln't imagine what Kane Creek would have looked like.

It's a good thing that John got some practice changing axles on Jeff's rig because guess what...

Thank you everybody who ran Cliffhanger with me. You kept up a great pace despite the 3 ring circus atmosphere due to hundreds of mountain bike racers, a couple of slow moving groups of other jeeps, motorcycles and quads that swarmed the trail. It was almost worth it just to continually hear the surprized reactions from the mountain bikers when they saw our group of station wagons making easy progress through the trail. :) This spot was a parking lot both times we went through:

It took the group of jeeps that started the trail ahead of us the same amount of time to get one of their vehicles up this rock after the creek crossing as it took us to get 7 through. Way to go, NAXJA drivers!

Some bonus pics.
I did Poison Spider Friday night, it was beautiful after the stormy weather that we just suffered through. Here is the spot just below the waterfall:

Is Tom Woods related to Paul Bunyan? Thanks for participating in out trail rides and raffle!

Speaking of the raffle, I won the coolest raffle prize EVER.

It's not too hard, we took a stock TJ through easily. The scenery is great, even by Moab standards. You can also camp amongst the needles in the Devil's Kitchen. Inquire at the Canyonlands National Park visitor center for the permit.

Got the hells gate/hells revenge pics that turned out (lost the neat ones due to darkness) up now, I think... If anyone who was there wants a CD of these, let me know and I'll bring 'em to a meeting or mail 'em out, if need be.

turned out to be a dangerous weekend for some in Moab, not to put a downer on the trip report. It was a great time!
a mountainbiker was killed on Kane Creek road during the race.
http://www.utahmountainbiking.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=407
and a rollover on Hells Revenge didn't end so well either.

Glad we didn't have any injurious mishaps and hope everyone got home safe. Had a great time and thanks to everyone who helped out. I'll get some pics up after work on my webshots account!

Just wanted to say thank to all who put this together and letting my family and I join in the fun/activities. Hope to be joining the club soon and becoming official. I'll post a link to the pics I have shortly. Now anyone got a rear driver's side tailight? I seem to have lost mine on Cliffhanger. :dunno:

Duane, someone in that topless Jeep of your got some left front seat time other than yourself. I seem to remember you riding the rock rails for a bit between obstacles.
I got a few bugs in my teeth too by doing the same. :D
