Ok, this might be a stupid question to some but since I only know (at least I think I do) of how to do it and never done it I'd like to get some questions answered:
So to measure compression I will pull all the plugs and hook up the tester to the first cylinder then turn it over couple times then read the dial, release pressure and repeat then move over to next cylinder. Now here comes the big question: doesn't fuel go into the cylinder during the process?? what happens to it after? any special precautions I should take?

Thanks.

You can always pull the fuse for the fuel pump......

I think the conventional way to do this is to use a remote starter switch between the battery and the starter relay, which cranks the engine with ignition off.

Just make yourself a remote starter. Jump from the batt+ to the "S" terminal on the starter an dhave a switch in there somewhere.

Makes the motor crank but no pesky fuel spray.

well it'd be easy if it was on my rig... but it's going to be on a car I'm thinking about buying.

Here's how I've always done it...

Remove coil wire.

Put compression tester in.

Crank.

Who cares about a little bit of gasoline on your hands?

As long as you're reasonably sure that the gas is getting blown out the exhaust valves and not pooling on top of the pistons.....

I still say, buy or borrow a cheap remote starter switch (handy thing to have anyway), which has a couple of alligator clips. One to Battery Pos, one to the little pos. terminal on the starter solenoid. Push button=crank. No gas puddles, no stray sparks, can do single-handed.

It'd be easier to use a remote start switch...the last time I did it in the Mustang I jumped the solenoid (on early Fords it's right on the firewall, so you can reach it with a screwdriver nice and easy)

Remote starter switch.

Cheap.

You should have one anyway.
