Just wanted to have you take a look at this and tell me if it might be a problem. I know it's not covering the tail light much at all, but I just thought it'd be good to check it out with the smart guys first. :D

In Utah, that wouldn't be a problem. If you had a Gerry can on it, I don't think a Trooper would let you get very far. :laugh3: Just seems like it would block too much of that light.

(sorry, I'm not a cop but I hang out with a few  )

That's about what I'm thinking. If I have a can on it the light isn't completely blocked out, there's about 3/4 of an inch left! :D

states may vary, and your highway patrol can give you a heads up..but as long as its clearly visible 1,000 feet to the rear (bikes are 600 feet), you should be fine. But yeah, i'd leave the can off til you get to the trail..if the Highway Patrol can follow you there..hand 'em a NAXJA sticker.

Taillamps

24600. During darkness every motor vehicle which is not in combination with any other vehicle and every vehicle at the end of a combination of vehicles shall be equipped with lighted taillamps mounted on the rear as follows:

(a) Every vehicle shall be equipped with one or more taillamps.

(b) Every vehicle, other than a motorcycle, manufactured and first registered on or after January 1, 1958, shall be equipped with not less than two taillamps, except that trailers and semitrailers manufactured after July 23, 1973, which are less than 30 inches wide, may be equipped with one taillamp which shall be mounted at or near the vertical centerline of the vehicles. If a vehicle is equipped with two taillamps, they shall be mounted as specified in subdivision (d).

(c) Every vehicle or vehicle at the end of a combination of vehicles, subject to subdivision (a) of Section 22406 shall be equipped with not less than two taillamps.

(d) When two taillamps are required, at least one shall be mounted at the left and one at the right side respectively at the same level.

(e) Taillamps shall be red in color and shall be plainly visible from all distances within 500 feet to the rear except that taillamps on vehicles manufactured after January 1, 1969, shall be plainly visible from all distances within 1,000 feet to the rear.

(f) Taillamps on vehicles manufactured on or after January 1, 1969, shall be mounted not lower than 15 inches nor higher than 72 inches, except that a tow truck, in addition to being equipped with the required taillamps, may also be equipped with two taillamps which may be mounted not lower than 15 inches nor higher than the maximum allowable vehicle height and as far forward as the rearmost portion of the driver's seat in the rearmost position. The additional taillamps on a tow truck shall be lighted whenever the headlamps are lighted.

That's from yer california motor vehicle code.

Personally I would not drive on a normal hiway with a rear mounted gas can like that and in some places it is illegal to do so, it's a bomb waiting to be hit from some jerk tailgating or not paying attention. I saw one of our 1/4 tons get whacked on a convoy by some impatient aaahhaa civilian wanting to get past the 100 plus vehicles, cap blew off and gas shot all over both vehicles and vehicles in the other lane [gas cap facing left or away from vehicle, it makes a difference if it hits the spare], lucky it did not ignite but for a few mintues it was a bit touchy and considering that all the m151's had tops and doors off could have been very bad. If you are looking for more range with a bigger tank then get a bigger tank, they do make them up to IIRC 28gallons w/skid built in, otherwise I'd only put it on when I got to the trail.

I like to carry extra fuel in a coffee can inside the XJ, right next to my propane tanks and bag of ammonium sulfate fertilizer.

I think this is the best way to transport gasoline, quite frankly.

You forgot to tape the lifeboat matches to the can, sheesh....

(e) Taillamps shall be red in color and shall be plainly visible from all distances within 500 feet to the rear except that taillamps on vehicles manufactured after January 1, 1969, shall be plainly visible from all distances within 1,000 feet to the rear. Granted, that's the Cali Code, but the way I'm reading it that would mean a problem with vehicle-mounted spares. "Within" 1000 feet reads as 0-1000 feet, and with a vehicle-mounted spare (or gerry can on the bumper) you can't see both taillights from within 5 feet or so of the rear of teh vehicle. With a gerry can mounted that close to the edge, it masks the light even farther out so a cop that knew his codebook could easily write that ticket. Whether he could make it stick if you opted to go to court would be an interesting exercise though.

I don't really plan to run the gerry can on the highway much at all. It's mainly for trail that I want to run it, the only thing I was curious about was the mount for it partially blocking the light. The nice thing is that when I go to Moab I'll be pulling a trailer, so I can run with the gerry can mounted for the 700 mile drive :D
