I have a stock Dana 44 for $500. It痴 in good shape no rock damage or anything. the brakes were done 6 or 8 months ago, including new drums. It has the 3.07 gears so it will need to be regeared to do anything fun with it. The reason I知 taking it off is that I found one with the gears I wanted and an ARB so I知 just swapping them. This one is actually in better shape. Anyway I知 gona let you local guys have first crack at it. I値l post it this weekend elsewhere if no one here is interested.

You値l have to pardon my confusion with your line of questioning. This is the stock axel off the back of my 87 XJ; to me this infers that it is XJ width, spline count and lug pattern and that it is set up for leaf springs. I do not know these numbers, but this axel will bolt right on to any stock XJ with the only possible modification being that you may need slightly wider U bolts to go around it then the ones used on the more common Dana 35.
As for the aluminum or cast thing, here agine I知 going to assume that this was the same for all 87XJ痴 with the 44. If you know enough to ask the question then you would be my best bet for figuring out how to tell the difference. The actual dif housing has the texture of a casting and is ferrous, indicating that it may be cast steel or iron. The tubes are also ferrous.

I think the only possible difference might be the thickness of the axle tubes. Also it being geared 3.07, it was most likely first under an MJ. Is there any indication on the spring perches of grinding marks or rewelds? Other than that it would be a good upgrade for someone.

There is no question as to the origin of this axel. It was original equipment on my 87 XJ. 3.07 is the stock setup with a manual.
