I was in the local pharmacy picking up a birthday card for the wife, one of the local deputies comes up and tells me he is finally going to get DSL. Very cool, as I do some computer work for the guy, and he needs DSL. So, he is telling me that they offer a higher speed service now. I told him I was on the centurytel site just yesterday, and no mention. He said he got a card in the mail. Hmmmmm.........

.........so I get home, and check their site. Sure enough, they now have three options. I start working on some story to tell the wife to justify the extra cost. :D I phoned up centurytel, and we talked for a bit. I came out with upgrading from 512/256 to 1.5/256 (they do not offer a higher upload :( ) AND, it will cost me like $20 less a month total. So, the wife is happy at the lower cost, I will get better downloads. A win-win situation. :)

The only downside is waiting for them to make the change. I orderd last week, and it is supposed to be done by the 24th. Trying to be patient... but that is a virtue that truely is for the weak. :D

So... if Centurytel is your provider..... you might ring them up, see if you can get the faster service and drop your bill too.

(OH... and before the urban dwellers start yapping about Cable internet, etc....and how I should change to cable: I live in a remote enough place that I am danged lucky to even get DSL. :) )

When my wife wasn't working I switched backfrom cable to DSL. Now that she found a job I can't justify the extra cost of cable. DSL is fast enough for me.

I've been thinking of switching to DSL as it is half the cost of my current cable service. How much slower will a 256k DSL line be than a cable modem? I had a site bookmarked that would tell me how fast my current connection is but it no worky any more.

Hard to say how much slower it would be without know the service plan you currently have. :D

You can go to www.dslreports.com (http://www.dslreports.com) and look at what others are saying about the providers in your area, Also, you can do a speed test there. "Tools" on the left side IIRC.

With were you live at, I'm surprised that you don't have to connect your computer to some sort of a contraption that sends out smoke signals to the CO office which then encodes those into packets :D

Naw, we are more modern than that. That being said... before DSL, we had to transport the data packets by row boat to the mainland. Storms sucked.... lots of dropped packets. Man, talk about lousy ping times.... was almost as bad as when I had Starband. hehe.

Well, I finally got cable after being a squeaky wheel about two months ago, once I got the ear of our local state rep at our chamber meetings they kind of fell all over themselves getting me up, had cable service guys running all over the neighborhood for a 3 weeks trying to fix the underground plant. It's pretty good, bought a motorola SB5100, that feeding my SMC7008 and an Cisco PIX thru an SMC switch. We have 3.2meg down and 256K up. Verizon is starting their roll out, or so they say, and I'm waiting on their business dsl, 7meg down 1.5meg up for $150 a month with 5 fixed IP's with no restrictions on running servers like the cable co has. Life is so much easier now that I don't have to live with my 28.8 dialup... Sure makes taking care of my customers systems much easier then having to drive to their sites and work.
