OK Ladies and Gents......and the rest of you.......where do we want to wheel in Feb? How does the 28th sound?
I'm making the suggestion to take a daytrip to the Little Sahara Rec. Area for some dune running and trail exploration, those that wanted to camp overnight could do so as well. Looks like about a 2hr drive from SLC to the dunes.

This is an open discussion so let's hear your thoughts........if you have another destination in mind, let's hear about it.

Yeah, Its about two hours. I used to go down there all the time when I was younger and had fourwheelers. Its alot of fun.
Just for your FYI you have to have a flag on a whip to go out on the dunes.

Know a good place to get a sand dune style flag on a whip? 4 wheeler shop?

Yeah, any 4 wheeler shop will sell them to you. If you head down I-15 to go to the dunes, get one at www.rockymountainatv.com in Payson, just west of the freeway exit. They were like $7-8 there last time I checked. They mount thru about a 1/2" hole drilled on a horizontal surface. This is how most ATV's are set up. Maybe they'd fit in one of the stock fog light mounting holes on the bumper. Sometimes during the summer, they sell flags right at the pay booth at the dunes, but no guarantees this time of year...

For you cheapies, go to Fred Meyer and get a bicycle flag, they're next to the training wheels :D .

Fred Meyer  thats not even cheap enough for me!
I think my CB whip is above 8' off the ground, all I guess I really need is to see if mom has some solid red or orange flag material left over from her 80's era sewing projects! ;)

I would go to Little Sahara but would like to put a twist into it. Here is my two cents. There is a 4WD road that you access north of the Recreation area that run east crossing Cherry Creek to Desert Mountain (6482'). From there you go in a North west direction towards the Simpson Mountains (8402') and wrap around the base of them until you come to the Pony express trail or Simpson Springs station. You take this back up and over Lookout Pass down to 5 mile pass and then into Lehi. This can be a very challenging road depending on the time of year, (mud & snow) GPS is highly recomended with all the spider roads out there. But, it very senic and has lots of history markers to teach us all those things we missed when we slept through history class. We can head out early to Little Sahara or do an overnighter? and then I would like to take that road back to what we call "reality" or home and work. So in other words, we would be doing a big, wet, muddy loop. Feedback please

Sounds fun but if you want to do a day trip to the dunes it might be alittle much. I would be way up for that if you were to say, Play on the dunes on a Sat and camp then do that on Sun.

Although I'm new to the state of Utah, I wouldn't even want to venture a guess as to how deep the snow will be at 8400'+ in elevation. :dunno:

Good thoughts on playing at the dunes Sat and then exploring on Sunday......although I will have to bail for SLC on Sat night. If a loop run over an 8400 pass is attempted in late Feb, plan on backtracking if the snow/mud gets too much to handle, as Dan has mentioned. Got a map link of that route?

Alright here is the scoop. I just got back yesterday from the Simpson Springs campgound photographing Pronghorn in the area. My brother-in-law and I stayed the night and awoke to 2-3' deep drifts all the way back to Lookout pass, (wind blows like hell out there). Was it impossible? no, was it challenging? oh yea! but fun too. I think the whole loop can be done but will require rigs that are set up well, and at least one winch present. The fog was so thick I ran off the road and got stuck in a 6' ditch that required winching by my brother-in-law's CJ. If the weather is sunny and no cold front arriving I would like to try it. Like XJblue said the highest point is Lookout pass and the BLM runs a grader across it. It's the drifts that become a bear. I think it could be a very memorable moment for our club. Hey, worst case? you pick your rig up in the spring run off.

Any reason why the 28th weekend won't work? This was the original target date because of the club wrenching session that was scheduled for the 21st at Box Elder High School. There are those that will be there on the 21st that also want to go to Little Sahara on the 28th. We could flop these dates, but we need to clear it with Jerry Harrison first, who is hosting the shop day.

We'll never get everyone out to every run, but we need to nail down the date this weekend so all that who are interested can plan for it.

Just FYI -

I was at the Little Sahara Recreation Area yesterday, right as the big snowstorm came in. There was about 4-10" of snow everywhere! The sand underneath was soaked and hard. We were riding ATV's, but there were a few guys there with 4x4's.

There was a YJ with 35" SSR's going right up the less-steep face. We saw a 'yota nearly roll as it slid sideways and out of control down the mountain. Super agressive tires will be the key in the sand with it this wet. Lot's of fun stuff to do, and lot's of places to wheel at the dunes. If most of the snow melts off of the sand - which it should barring any more huge snowfalls - then we should be able to get some serious traction there.

Entrance is $8/rig which includes campers until 2pm the next day. Yes, flags are mandatory. Only the 2 holer stinkhouse is open for restroom facilities and there is no running water. There is a dumpster for our broken equipment and other refuse.

I'm going to really try to make it down for the Saturday part (28th) which I assume will be the dune ride portion. I just applied for a sales position at 4-wheel parts in Riverdale, and I know that Saturday is a big day for them. So, we'll see what I can do. As a side note, some of us guys who work in retail have a difficult time planning everything on Saturdays. This is often the most difficult day of the week to get off. Needing 2-3 per month off is simply not a possibility.

Airing the tires down a little and cold wet sand make a good combo, aggressive, mudder type tires work better to.....paddle effect. There's a lot of trail area to research out there so running dunes isn't the only option either. And don't forget sand boarding and toboggin runs......... ;)

Seriously, have you guys ever gone sledding at the dunes? Yeeowza! With the dry fluffy sand that you get all summer, you can really get cruisin on one of those plastic saucer sleds. If you don't mind getting a handful of sand up your crack, it's a blast.

Personally, I think that cruisin the dunes in Jeeps with wet sand would be a blast. Of course, I'm more of an "enjoy the journey more than the destination" kind of guys.

Following the discussion at our Chapter meeting on the 21st, here's the plan for the 28th.

Meet at the Little Sahara Entrance parking lot at 9am, Saturday the 28th. We'll stage here until approx 9:30am so everyone can pay fees, attach flags, and we'll decide as a group on which areas we want to explore.
Sand condition should be ideal with the southern part of the state getting rain/snow during the week.

BLM entry fee will be $8.00 and everyone will be required to run an orange flag. If you don't bring one, you can buy one at the Fee station, but you don't get in without one.
UPDATE Looks like the flag must be at least 8 feet from the ground, so you can hook one on the top of your CB whip if it meets this requirement.
If you plan on staying over night and running on Sunday as well, then it is recommended that you bring an extra 5 gals of fuel just in case.

Check back here for updates during the week and hope to see ya'll there!

Those with gas guzzlers like mine may want to bring 10 gallons of fuel. The nearest gas is in Eureka, which I think is about 30 miles from the dunes. Mine takes 2-3 gallons just to go those 30 miles, and 2-3 gallons to go back. Aired down tires and snow/sand suck a lot of fuel too.

Lookin like I can make it. Should we do a headcount?

If you're taking Hwy 6 off of 1-15 (at Santaquin) then Eureka is the last town you go thru on your way to Little Sahara. If you are taking SR 36 from I-80 thru Tooele, Eureka is still the closest gas - but you have to backtrack like 5 miles to get it. SR 36 merges with Hwy 6 about 5ish miles south of Eureka.

Sweet score on the WJ parts. BTW, the RE springs may not be available now. Right on the advertised lift height, I was giving actual install heights. RE stuff tends to measure out higher than advertised, not that it's a bad thing. Go with the 1462's, you 'll be happy.

Just a thought, there is to be a 60% chance of snow on Saturday. I was out at Little Moab yesterday and the road getting out there was 6 to 12 inches deep with mud, it rained all day. I was lucky to have the new BFG M/T's that barley got me through some spots. Don't get me wrong I had fun but it was real messy. So I am going to make it a day trip only if this thing is still on, even if it snows?

Just a thought, there is to be a 60% chance of snow on Saturday. I was out at Little Moab yesterday and the road getting out there was 6 to 12 inches deep with mud, it rained all day. I was lucky to have the new BFG M/T's that barley got me through some spots. Don't get me wrong I had fun but it was real messy. So I am going to make it a day trip only if this thing is still on, even if it snows?

It's on!! rain snow or shine right? snow wheelin on the sand dunes sounds like a great time, 6 - 12 inches of mud doesn't, my AT's are much less than ideal anyway.... We should plan to do that loop later in the year!

I put on the swampers again yesterday. Today I'm installing 2 front tow hooks and a CB. I'm going even if I go alone! See you guys Saturday morning, 9am sharp at the pay booth parking lot.

Here's the forcast http://weather.ksl.com/phputil/weather/weather_parse.php?place=little+sahara&submit.x=12&submit.y=9&submit=submit

The run is on, rain snow or shine.....just turn on the heater, it's not like we're driving topless, doorless rigs, right? We're gonna have some fun in the sand, even if it is frosted.
Drive safe and I'll see you there at 9am.

4th Amigo here. I got rid of my loose LCA heim joints today so I'm one step closer to making out to the show-n-shines. LCA brackets are next on the short list so I'm on the sidelines for this one, ...again. :looser:

It's an urban legend.

Bretto, I never heard back, how'd my D44 drums work out for you?

btw Dan, thanks for the 'supplies'. :D

I just installed the front receiver today, but didn't manage to reinstall the modified front bumper. But, missing my front license plate is probably the least of my legal worries :nono:

Also got the CB going (hopefully). I have a HUGE whip antenna to put my flag on too. Hope all this crap works...

Well, since nobody else is on the ball, I guess I'll post twice in a row. The trip was a success. Well, the part I was there for anyway. Hungry 7 week-old and fried throttle position sensor were the welcome to my trip. I arrived about an hour and a half late and missed everybody starting the trails. After searching for an hour or so, they found me eating lunch by Sand Mountain. We quickly got ready for more trails and spent the next hour or so goofing off in the foothils of the larger dunes.

We got word from a large ATVer that one of our own was stranded with mechanical problems about a mile back, so we went over as a group to rescue him. After fiddling under the hood of BrianR's Vortec XJ for an hour or so, we gave up and deciced to tow it out. I, being the manliest of the bunch, was given the honors of towing it out to the ranger station. I left him there to wait for someone with a trailer to pick him up. Then I went to find the other guys and run one last trail before heading back. I regrouped with the other guys pretty quickly and we blasted along the smaller dunes for a while. This was a whole lot of fun for all. XJEEPER got some mad air with his Cherokee in front of the video camera. We'll have to get that made into digital soon so you other guys can learn from the master.

When we headed out to meet BrianR, he was waiting for us at the end of the trail, with his Jeep fixed. Turns out he had it running within 5 minutes of when I left him. Go figure...

As usual, I got a pretty poor mix of pictures. Sorry for those that aren't in them. You other digital guys feel free to chime in with your pics too.

Enjoy!

Thanks for posting pics Jared! It was a great time. Let's see, in attendance were:
Bigjoe and family
DeadEye and family
XJblue
XJEEPER and son
Itzak
Brian R. and family
Climbon

and myself.
Xjblue and I were thinking this ought to be an annual February event.
Deadeye seemed to have the best traction and was doing just about everything in 2wd while the rest of us needed 4wd.
BigJoe broke a rear shock mount off the axle. Brian R. had engine problems but fixed them by the end of the run. Myself and Itzak got stuck once. One of my mudflaps disappeared.
It was pretty nice for most of the run but got hella cold near the end there.
Hope everyone got home safely. Can't wait to see Xjblue's pics.
Next year, XJEEPER will go for a distance, sand dune jumping record so you all will have to be there. :peace:

Had an excellent time! my little goodyear at-d's didn't dig in too bad at all, only droped tire pressure 5 lbs. Good thing we didn't stay to do the loop with all this snow coming down. will post link to pics on the "was it worth it" thread because that sounds appropriate!

We had a great time at the dunes and hope to get back there again with an even bigger NAXJA IC turnout.
The sand conditions were perfect, the company was great and we only had a couple of stucks that were short lived.
BigJoe lost a rear axle shock mount, BrianR was sidelined with a fuel delivery problem that wound up being a simple fix once discovered (who'd have thought to check the fuel pump electrical connection IN THE TANK!!) and the weather cooperated with us too.
I got to try out my new 285 MTR's which worked well, but really worked out my tired ol' motor in the sand too, I NEED MORE HP!!

Thanks to those it attendance and for supporting NAXJA IC........and thank you for flying XJ Airlines..........

Brian, If I'd known that was you out there I would come over and said Hi.
I figured whoever it was there was enough gearheads there that they could get the jeep up and running. :repair:
Sorry we missed you guys.
I'll be off on Monday to relocate my shock mounts and find some shorter shocks......Dan, some of us have to learn the hard way.
Looks like I missed the best part of the trip but still has a great time!
Later,
Joe
