On several of the pictures there is what looks like a disk brake rotor/caliper right above the differential(both front and rear). What is that used for?

Now and days, if you don't have 40's and larger, you ain't chit! :)
Those 49" Iroks were huge!
I felt like a stocker next to this guys.
As for the Rockwells, that is the pinon brake.

"pinon brake???"
How is this an advantage over a low-gear t-case and a 4-disc brake set?
Am I asking the wrong question?

Because you don't have to mess with brakes at the wheels -- Simplicity. Plus, the gear reduction in the axles increases the effective breaking power at the wheels.
And well, that's just how Rockwell axles are setup to start with. ;)

Rockwells are not set up with pinion brakes from the factory. Factory rockwells come with large drums.
Pinion brakes are a cheap, redneck way of achieving braking. They work, but are not the most elegant of solutions, and I certainly wouldn't trust them on the highway, especially with a Detroit.
Some sweet fab work on those XJ's. :rolleyes"

So, is it just me, or is the guy in the first pic rolling big on 49s, sportin a full cage, runnin doorless and using the stock seatbelt? That just seems a little sketch to me. If you're gonna go big, get the safety gear to match.

DOH! My bad, guess I've always just seen Rockwells on trail rigs, and they always had pinion brakes, so I ass-u-me'ed that's how they came. :anon:
And now that you mention it (and I think about it more), I don't think those kind of brakes are street legal to begin with, at least not without some other kind of brakes at the wheel itself too...

He finished the exo cage in less then a day to compete in the event. It's still work in progress. I don't think the fabricators had any intention of spending mega bucks on the project.
