242 output shaft question

I just changed the rear output seal on my 242. It looked like the end of the shaft was drilled and tapped (working by a 40w light and "on the clock" to get it done). Is this possible? It would make doing a SYE much easier if it is.

I know the spot you are talking about but think it is for centering the shaft when it was milled.
