Cruise Control Question

I have an 89 XJ that appears to have cruise control. The turn signal stalk has a slider switch on the front and a button on the end. The labels are worn off so I am assuming it is cruise. How does it operate? I can't seem to get it to work, but it may be operator malfunction.
