Thinking of going to 4.56. Also heard there's a 'stronger' 44 shaft that fits into a dana 35? Or maybe it's a 35, that's almost as strong as a 44..not too clear on this stuff, but upgrading, so doing what I can now. April in moab will be my trial run for Rubicon in August, so trying to get the stuff done now. I don't think I can afford the sye anymore, so those upgrades at Woody's are not gonna happen....

Don't spend any money on the D35.....just my opinion. late model 8.25, 8.8 or something, would be money better spent.

What tire are you running, what is your driving style, expectations on breakage, preparation with spare parts/tools, etc?

John,
Here's a JU link (http://www.jeepsunlimited.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=479981). Looks like the guy is selling a complete D35 with a Super 35 kit already installed. $400 is a smoking deal. Prefer not to ship, but worth looking into and try to work something out with the guy if you don't want to go a D44. PorchPuppy runs a Super 35, and he wheels the thing down in JV.
HTH
Thanks,
Dan.

PS I'm looking for someone with a table saw and some wood working skills.

That's almost worth thinking about.......depends on how you wheel

The one bad thing that isn't addressed is the housing. If he wheels hard or runs 33" or larger, I think it's just a matter of time until the housing bends and his Detroit takes a puke.....

I ran a super 35 wiith 35" tires for about 2 years without a problem. It really depends on your driving style if you would bend an axle tube. Another words if your the type of guy who would try to gas his way out of situation that called for a strap. I can tell you I THOUGHT I would be happy with a super 35 and that I could save a little money. Yeah right, I never stopped wanting a 44 and in the end I got one. I built my 44 for about $1500. I got the housing at pick and pull picked up some Zj disk brake parts from U Pull, gears from a buddy and a slightly used detroit from Miss Conceptions. I had them throw it all togethor and man do I wish I had done it right the first time. Oh yeah I forgot about the Mosser shafts and machine work that had to be done to the brake parts. Hope this helps. :passgas:

33's, moderate trails/rocks. I've gotten cautious in my old age. Don't enjoy breakage. so tend to avoid that where possible. Have two spare shafts for the 35. If I pack all the tools I have, there won't be any room for me to get in the damned thing...I um..well, there was this sale, see and um..

I happen to know where a mildly used ARB equipped, 4:56 geared D35 out of a 97 XJ is.......local.
I know folks that have wheeled with 33's and a D35 for years without any problems, I also know of folks that have run 31-32's and turned the housing into a boomerang........

I will second this recommendation. JR did a great job and for a very good price. What was the problem with the work done on Joe's rig?

BigJoe might have to answer that one completely. But I know he got 1/4 of the way home and had to turn it around and head back to Ms. Conception's.

So the question is, was the problem resolved to Joe's satisfaction?
JR's been good to me, set up a few different ratios in various axles.

I too have had a few problems with with Ms Conception but JR has ALWAYS made things right. I can't say the same with other shops that I've been too.

Ask BigJoe what 4Wheel Parts did to his XJ. :smsoap:

yeah I know he fixed Joe's, but didn't yours seize up on the way home? I personally have not had one problem with mine front or rear. Of course somewhere down the line every company is gonna have a little mishap here and there.
So we are all in agreeance that Ms. Conception is a good place to go!

I should be okay with 35's..I'm not gonna launch the thing, and not doing 'oh my gawd' trails. If I break the 35, well, then, I'll go with 44's or develop a liking for granola and hike a lot :P What's the addy info on ms conception, since I guess I need the front 30 done in 4:56, as well? (since I even have to ask, you can see why I ain't touching this myself, putting in the locker in the 35 was enough for me :P) :pig:

I have to agree with JEEPZZ. JR has always made things right for me and without any discussion. I didn't have any problems with my gear set up it was with the locker. This was something that wasn't ever resolved by the factory as far as I know. JR DID take care of it for me and I haven't had any issues since.
So.....In JR's defense. He'll take care of you if you have a problem. There's not too many people out there that will.
Nuff said.

Had the gearing done a couple of weeks ago, found a few other problems, that ran it up to $1900.00. He told me I had a bad CV, but when I drove it home, it acts like the front brakes aren't even there. Didn't do that before. There's a horrible grinding sound in the front, I'm scared to drive the damned thing. I parked it, had to go out of town, but when I moved it this past Tuesday, the rear locked, like the emergency brake was on, it was that tight. It gave a loud POP, then moved okay. I'm beyond discouraged.

It'll be towed in, prolly tomorrow, and checked out. I'll have the CV replaced, at the same time. Trying to cover all the bases, because this must be done by April. I dunno. I just want the damned thing DONE, so that what I work on, is an upgrade, making it more safe, or able to go farther, not just spinning in place, or going backward. Anyway, thanks for the responses, he actually called me at home, while I was sitting cross-eyed with a migrane staring at the ceiling.
