Who want's to go? I'm going to Moab the first week of May and want to do something different. How does May 1~3 sound?

BTW, I don't know anything about this trail, if you have done it I would like to hear your story about it. :)

Havn't been there and all I know is it is somewhere on the south side of Lake Powell near Halls crossing, not to be confused with Hole in the Rock scenic backway wich starts near Escelante (north side), been there a few times.

A quick search produced this link - http://www.utah.com/offroad/hole_rock.htm
and another better one
http://www.4x4now.com/mthitr.htm - check the trail report links at the bottom.
sounds like a good time - rated 4 - can i do it with my 2" BB XJ? I've only been to that area of Utah once before.

I didn't know about the guy with the Liberty. I don't know about doing it with a BB either, I've never been there and would like input. :)

Never run the trail Alex, but have always wanted to. Does this mean that you aren't coming up to Moab in April?

I'm still planning to make that trip, it'll be 3 trips to Moab for sure, possibly as many as 5 for me this year. Can you blame me for looking for something different to run? :D

That sounds great! I'd never talk anyone out of going to Moab.......for whatever reason! Hope I can make 5 trips this year.....you must be single?

Hey Alex, you still going to do this?

No. :( I had 3 different people lined up to do this trip and they all backed out. The last guy I was sure would go, he has a Cherokee and drove out to Moab from Missouri for a coupla weeks. He just called and said he was going to stay in town and wheel those trails for the duration. He called from Slickrock Campground today to cancel, he said that the campground is the HQ for Cruise Moab and he is surrounded by Landcruisers.

Maybe we can try to get an overnight trip to this trail on the schedule for the Fall Fling? I tried to stir up interest for a similar trip to the White Rim for the '03 FF but nobody bit so I ended up going by myself.

I'm going to be at Slickrock May 1~9, my old friends from California are coming out so I am going back to hang with them. What better way to stay in touch, huh? :D If you haven't had enough Moab, come on down and look me up! I'm bringing my mountain bike this time.

Cruise Moab and a Bronco fari as well. I'll figure out how much is left over for another trip. I would love to bring the bike down and run Porcupine Rim for the first time!

Yeah, I'd love to do Porcupine Rim but in my current condition I would probably have to do it as a shuttle most of the way to the top.

lol, In my condition I was thinking an offroad shuttle all the way out to the rim! maybe helicopter support..... I could probably swing it, but It would have to be this Saturday the 1st wich is probably your travel day?

So if we were to plan this Hole in the Rock run during the fall fling I'm thinking it would be easier to tack it on at the beginning of that week or the end after the friday night festivities. Will you have a rig by then Marc?

Hmmmmmm..........I doubt it. Not one that I trust to get me back home or not puke a connecting rod halfway into the trail. Any interest in doing it as part of the NAXJA run in the fall? I'm in for that for sure.......

I hope to leave Friday directly from work, with an ETA at Slickrock of about 11:30 PM. If that happens, I could do it Saturday. We might even be able to arrange a shuttle with that guy from Missouri. I'll know for sure tomorrow.

That's what I was thinking too! Maybe do Hole in the Rock Sunday and Monday of the week of the Fall Fling.

Right Marc, that's what I was thinking, fall fling so we have time to prepare. Sunday/Monday would be perfect, gives us Saturday to get down there and be back for official Fall Fling runs in Moab.

Alex if you can do Porcupine Saturday then I will be there, the MJ will have to wait another week. I can leave after work tomorrow as well and probably just camp for free near deadhorse, then meet up saturday morning. We can leave a Jeep at the end right? If so I know we both can carry two bikes easy so if that guy can't help no worries.

That sounds like a plan! That guy's name is John, his XJ should have Missouri plates. He said that he is in site 117 at Slickrock, that is a tent site right up against the back fence. I'll probably make camp right by him, look for my little yellow tent. Can you meet me there... say no later than 10 AM Saturday? If John can't shuttle us, we can just use our own Jeeps.

Ok site 117, little yellow tent, no later than 10am, if you prefer earlier than 10 no problem, I'll be there.

Our off road bike shuttle worked out great. We dropped off Handlebars rig at the bottom of the Porcupine Rim mtb trail. Threw his bike on my XJ and drove up Sand Flats Road to the start. Disconnected then kept driving out on the Porcupine Rim trail past many huffing and puffing and sweaty bikers. We found a patch of trailside slickrock to park on, then after quick repairs due to a minor tree/bike incedent we jumped on the bikes and joined in the huffing and puffing the rest of the way to the rim. Killer views then a killer 11 mile descent. We passed a Ranger in a wrangler, then some kid in a TJ who recieved an expensive lesson on staying on the trail from the Ranger. He had driven down past the signed end of the Jeep trail along the narrow ledge the bike trail descends on. :wstupid: At the bottom we threw the bikes on Handlebars XJ, drove back up to the start and out to my Jeep passing the Ranger and the :wstupid: again. I followed Alex out, he wanted to explore a trail connecting to fins n things but my fuel was real low for exploring a new trail let alone steep fins, so we settled for baby lions back on the way out. I decided to call it a trip and went to Chevron to air up gas up reconnect and drive home, went to reconnect and one of my new tereflex disco mount pin was missing! Went to find Alex for help/advice but he wasn't at camp. So I drove back up sand flats road and back out on the Porcupine rim trail to were we had parked. Drove as fast as I dared to beat the setting sun and kept an eye out for shiny metal objects. Just below the first ledge we had dropped on the way out sat my pin and washers, and the nut sat on the ledge right above them. 1 Lesson I learned was that anytime you think you heard something metallic falling on rock and have an urge to get out and look - get out and look! I made it back out got reconnected, hit Wendys and the highway for home just as the sun set.

I"ve driven it, but it's been almost 10 years. :D

If I remember correctly the trail head is about 7 miles back towards Blanding from Halls crossing. You can drive in about 1 or 2 miles from the pavement to some decent camping. It's down in a draw.

The last time I drove it, it took about 10+ hours from that point back (about 15 rigs). Nothing real difficult but a very long day. We left camp with headlights and returned after dark. High geared sticks can get interesting in the chute though.

I would plan on 1/2 day travel from Moab there a day to run and 1/2 to get back if your going to run it for Fall Fest.

I have done hole in the rock trail and had a great time I enjoyed the challenge since I did it when I only had 3.5" lift, 31" tires & open diff 's (I also towed an off-road tent trailer through half of it - love to abuse that trailer!!). I only had to take a strap once (hate to admit it though). It has some unique challenges but is a pretty long trail. For anyone planning a trip, I would suggest you plan to spend two nights. We actually camped about half way in the first day, then rode to the end and back to camp the 2 day and then rode out and back home the 3rd day (taking the ferry across Powel). Also it is good to do as early in the season as possible as it gets pretty hot down there (or else do it in the fall).

Better late than never... Thanks for doing that ride, Jared! It got me so jazzed about getting in shape that I have rode my bike to work a couple of times since I got back. Anyways, by now you know what a pic whore I am so here are some of my faves from that trip:

This was the biker crowd on the porcupine rim at the "high anxiety" viewpoint.

We were headed up late in the day in order to have dinner and watch the sunset from the overlook, I think the angle of the afternoon sun really helped a lot, as well as her choice of shooting from inside the devil's crack.

Going back down in the dark was quite a challange! You would think that the trail would be easy to follow, but we lost it several times.

That sunset was disappointing after the superlative one in Arches the day before.
