automatic shifter stuck

I just bought an 87 xj for 500, (sweet trail rig- already set up, runs great)
It doesnt have any plastic or carpet, so the shifter know is exposed and very rusty. I can't shift out of park without using a screw driver- I cant push the button. Once I get out of park to drive her, I cant put it in park to get the key out. any ideas? I could leave the key in permanently, or replace the whole dang apparatus (hard?). thoughts?

Can you spray it down with some lubercant?

Take the handle off and spray some down there also. (to remove yank up or hit it up hard)
