here is a link to my webshots account...the tire carrier album is second from the bottom. i used a rockstomper hinge and a 2,000lbs Carr-Lane latch. everything works great, but im going to ditch the whole set up to make a new bumper w/o a tire carrier on it.

Okay, if the image isn't working, copy and paste the url, that should work to see the image. Time for a new photo host.

Sorry for the bad link to their site. Here's another one:
http://www.bpifab.com/bumper/cherokee_rear.htm

They are ready for mass production now. Email Tim at info@bpifab.com with any questions.

The price is going to be $772 with the powder coating. I hear that their shipping prices aren't too bad though....which may offset some of the cost.

Damn, I could have sworn there was text with my post. Right now it's basically just a bolt through the bracket and arm, in fact it is the bolt and screw down plastic thing that held the spare in the original location. It is temporary until I figure out a good latch system.

HINGE info please, please, please. i need a hinge that will face mount to an aftermarket bumper. one like this that doesn't cost $100 and you have to order 15 at a time.

I wish I'd taken a picture of the hinge but I'll try and explain it. I found some bearings at Lowe's in the bin section that are similar to the bearings you find on bike wheels. I bought two for about a buck or so each and they have a .5" hole to pass a bolt through. I had a piece of 1" ID pipe that I cut down to 3" in length and pressed a bearing into each end. I welded the pipe to the 2"x3" channel I was using for the tire carrier and voila! I then just welded a bracket to the bumper, drilled a hole in each end, passed a .5" bolt through the top of the bracket, through the bearings assembly and through the bottom bracket. Used some greased up copper washers on each end and tightened it down. It looks like that picture you posted except it doesn't have a zerk fitting on it. Cost was about four bucks. I actually like my hinge. If I get a chance, I'll try and get a picture. Good luck.

Hey, no laughing! It's temporary!

I believe the protofab unit is the best thought out of all the units....and being several hundred dollars cheaper dont hurt none.....its available with undercarriage extensions now and reciever hitch.....

I think that the best-looking bumper/tire-carrier combo, is the AEV one. And I've read testimonials that it works great too. Here is a link to AEV's site.

http://aev-conversions.com/ssi/osb/showitem.cfm?&Description=x?xj

Click on the tire carrier to see a great animated presentation of its features.

AEV's bumper is a great design but their deliver time sucks. I've been waiting 8 months for one. They keep telling me "just a few more weeks". If they spent as much time building bumpers as Dave's brother Jordan did designing their website they'd be rolling in the $$$.
The latest news is they've decided to subcontract out the XJ bumpers so production has begun again but at a snails pace. The first handful of bumpers out are having powdercoat & rust problems unlike the in house built ones.
I got very impatient with AEV's delays and recently bought the Kaymar unit instead.
Here's mine:

http://home.earthlink.net/~tcampbe59/_uimages/DSC01598.JPG

Once again I'm waiting on the swing out tire carrier. 2 months they said, so we'll see. The bumper showed up 3 days after I ordered it from Man-A-Fre.

AEV did give me great a hook up on the ARB roof rack though. It was a looong drive to Montana to get it.

This one?? It belongs to my friend Joe. He previously had a 96 Classic with the Custom 4x4 rear bumper but on his new 2001, (pictured) he'd like to go with the AEV. I told him that he could have my place in line since I've already been waiting 8 months.

Just so we aren't getting too O.T., here's a Bulletproof Man. rear bumper on a 97 or 98.

I really like my C4x4 rear bumper and tire carrier. I also think their price is a little more reasonable than others.

Todd, if the arm is on top of the bumper, and the latch is on the face, how does it work?? I've got my carrier built and ready to install on my custom bumper, but I can't figure out an effective latch design. Since I don't have a spare tire yet(well, no rim for the spare) I haven't been that worried about it. Any closeups of how the latch works? Thanks

Here's a few pics of Kaymar's design.

http://home.earthlink.net/~tcampbe59/_uimages/kaymarpivotandlatch.JPG
http://home.earthlink.net/~tcampbe59/_uimages/xjrearbumperkaymaropen.jpg

As you can see, both ends of the carrier arm carry the weight when closed but the spindle (two sets of tapered roller bearings) carries the weight. The spindle pivot also has an automatic lock to hold the carrier in the open position.
There is more info and better pics of the over center latch and spindle pivot on Kaymar's (http://www.kaymar.com.au/jeepcher.html) XJ page.
