We'd talked of a run thru this area... Not sure if we're totally screwed..again..or not. The above was taken from ARRA's January Newsletter. I have a lot of comments to make, but..could be women and children about, so I'll just grind my teeth. If it's because of the wildfires, it's a reasonable response..but I just have a sinking feeling about 'temporary' closures being like a temporary tax...

Where have the fires been? Obviously not around Rattlesnake or Constrictor, because I've ran those trails about 6 times now, and haven't noticed any fire damage.

I don't think that this completely eliminates the entire area......case in point, the Utah 4WD Assoc. is holding it's winter convention/run in 3 weeks (Jan 24th) at the 5 Mile Pass area. Been lots of discussion on this subject on the RME site.

With all the snow that we have recieved the grasses and small bushes should get a great start next spring. I do not think that this area will need to be closed for more than one season.
There really was not much out there accept maybe a few juniper trees.

There can be many reasons as to why a place gets closed. One of them is when humans trash a place real bad as I have found in the past. I think the main reason for 5-mile pass is lack of budget money for the BLM to manage it properly with the man power required per acreage. So to see sections of land shut down is normal.

Some good points here, but all is not lost on this one. I've been following threads on the RME Forum as well as Jeep-SLC list and the Utah 4WDA and other local clubs have sponsored trail cleanups and maintenance in the 5 Mile Pass Rec Area in the past and will continue to do so. This has shown a solid commitment by local OHV users to keep this area clean and open and educate others on proper trail use.
Plan on being involved in these activities when they come available and show your "hands on" support as well.
