I am about to replace my 3rd output shaft seal for my AX15. I have 127k on my 96. The last seal only lasted 1 week. I was careful on the install. Everything went on straight, the seal was prelubed and all seemed well. Any ideas? I getting tired of yanking my tcase out.

all i can think is the t/case input may have a worn section in it where the seal rides.. ive seen this on axles before..

a. do you have a tcase drop?? excess drop (I had over an inch for couple of weeks) seemed to have coincided with mine going out
b. how is the vent on top? Good? clogged? If it's getting stuck, you will build up excess pressure and blow the output seal....

No tcase drop. But my vent might be clogged. That is under the boot on top by the gear shifter right? I have been planning on relocating that vent to the engine compartment anyway. Any advice on this?
Thanks

I did consider doing that myself and I kind of gave up. Issue is that not only it's under the boot, but it's some funky plastic nipple that IIRC needs to be taken out with the plate as if you try to pop it out on it's own it will disintegrate (heard that from two different people)... Anyways, if you end up doing it could you post how did it go, as I'm definately interested in the process :D

Well, I have had that plate off before. I will dig into it again and if I do it I will take some pics. Thanks for the info.

Well I got the vent tube relocated. I forgot to take pics but here is the story. I had to remove the entire consol. There are 4 12mm bolts holding the shifter plate on. There are 2 ways to remove them. One is to drop the tranny to get them from underneath or bend the sheet metal on top just enough to get a ratchet in. Once the plate is off you can tap the vent out with a hammer and screwdriver. Then I tapped the hole with a 1/4 NPT thread. Added a hose adapter and clamped the hose on. I ran it to the fire wall. Then I added a small K&N filter on top and it is good to go. It was a PITA. Still have to put the consol back in and hook my driveshafts back up from the output shaft seal change.
