Late last night, I hard-installed my GPS. Just thought I'd share this tidbit, because someone might find it interesting or useful. :)

Disassembled dash. Trimmed blank dash panel surface to accomodate 2.5" RAM mounting plate. Wired Garmin GPS using Garmin Power/Data cable with bare ends to fuse box. Reassembled dash. Mounted RAM arm assembly with old Garmin GPS III.

RAM Mounts are sweet. A little pricey, but not too unreasonable. They make mounting brackets for most popular GPS models. This setup used to be in my TJ, but I'm starting to get the XJ ready for trails.

No modifications at all on the dash, gets power from the lighter socket, if you want to take it off, just cut the tie-wrap, used a flashlight that plugged in the lighter to make this FREE mount. Tie-wrap goes around a loosened dash screw.

Looks good Chris, that's where I put my ARB switches. ;) :D

I've got my eMap mounted using the Garmin automotive dash mount. The pad is mounted to the top of the dash directly over the panel you mounted yours to, and the "arm" cantilevers out in front of the dash.
