View Full Version : Intermountain Chapter boundaries

Looks like there are two things left to take care of before the formation of the Chapter. The first is getting the Chapter by-laws accurate. This hasn't been as easy as some might think but it should be done here soon and reflect the way our Chapter BOD will be set up. The second item we need to take care of is defining the boundaries of our Intermountain Chapter. I am with XJEEPER on this and I think the Chapter should encompass Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Arizona, New Mexico and Nevada. This would mean there might be some overlap of existing Chapters but it would give members in those areas a chance to participate in NAXJA events. If new Chapters develop in those areas like AZ or NM then we could simply amend our by-laws. What do ya'll think?

Sooo, I guess 'From Sea to shining Sea' is out? Okay, looks good to me. The by-laws can be amended, as pointed out. I take it we didn't put Colorado in there to avoid stepping on toes? Maybe a gentelmen's agreement (we can rent a gentleman if needed) with Colorado, that if one or two of their people are closer to us, they're welcome?

I'll add more later when I have the time, but right now I'm just wondering if this area is too large? I understand the idea behind it and think there's nothing to worry about as far as managing it, but some areas in surrounding states are FAR away. I was under the impression we were considering PARTS of surrounding states. But then, if any of those areas built up enough of a member base to form their own chapter we can amend the bylaws to reduce the coverage. Does that sound like I'm arguing against myself? :D

We could easily add Colorado and Montana for that matter. This makes a nice swath from Mexico to Canada. The reality is that there will be additional chapters developed in the western states over the next few years, which may require the Intermountain Chapter to amend the bylaws regarding the chapter footprint. This can be addressed on an as-needed basis. We'll include all that want to be involved, and let individuals make the decision on which chapter makes the most sense for them to associate with. There will be those that only participate in events that are staged close to their geographic region, but this may open up more opportuninties to explore states surrounding Utah. Members will also have the option to be involved in multiple regional chapters if they are so inclined.
:)

Yeah, I intentionally didn't include Colorado because I thought they were thinking about starting their own chapter. Montana, ah dunno, there's a state (states) in between Utah and them but I guess if there are any members from there that are interested we could do it.

The only change I can see is to change Nevada To say Eastern Navada and to add Western Colorado. No borders in those states let members from those states decide if they fit. other than that the list looks perfect .

Rick, didn't you see the memo on the blantant exploitation of emoticons? Or is that your posse? :D
E Nevada and W Colo is fine with me. We can leave Montana in limbo for now, adding it later if we see the demand.

Been busy traveling, but still look into the latest. I feel we are pushing the chapter area too large. First Utah chapter now intermountain. The idea is to get to "meet" people in person through events not by this web site alone. Last year we had some great events that I know alot of these other states would never been able to attend. This is not being selfish, but practical. Yes we all want to get this chapter up and running and complete but let's take our time on the thinking process. Thanks Keith

I agree. I still think the area is too large. We're trying to be too inclusive and it makes for one overly large region. Think about it....just how many people will travel from Wyoming or New Mexico, for example, to attend a trail run in Providence Canyon? And I'd be surprised if we got more than two people total from any of the neighboring states to attend a chapter meeting. We can extend invitations to anyone outside the chapter boundaries to attend our events, but do we really need to extend the chapter boundaries to those states? I don't think so.
We determined there are plenty of XJ owners right here in Utah to form a chapter, one with the potential to have the largest member roster. Comparatively speaking, Utah is a large state. It's my opinion the chapter boundaries include all of Utah and only part of Idaho. We can make exceptions on a case-by-case basis. This might include northern Arizona or western parts of Nevada. Colorado should have enough to form their own chapter. Quite frankly, I think a chapter that encompasses too large of an area only hinders those outside areas from forming their own chapters.
Again, we can invite anyone outside the chapter boundaries to participate in our events. I just don't see the need to make the region fit those extended areas. Let's keep the discussion going.

Excerpt taken from the upcoming NAXJA newsletter, regarding the Intermountain Chapter boundaries:
"As the name implies, the decision was made to include more than just Utah in the chapter boundaries. We wanted to give those in the surrounding states the opportunity to get involved as well. We have yet to nail down the exact boundaries, but most likely they will include Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Eastern Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico. We hope to see some of these states increase in NAXJA membership in the future, to the point that they can peel off and form their own local chapters…..until then, we welcome them and encourage them to spread the word."
Will someone from AZ or NM come the SLC area for a monthly chapter meeting or trail cleanup? Not likely. Will they hook up with us in Moab for a chapter trail run? Odds are pretty good that they will. In addition, folks in Southern Idaho, Nevada and Wyoming who are closer to Utah have already voiced positive input on their involvement with the Imtn. Chapter.
Please keep in mind that the intent here is to include those NAXJA members that would like to be involved in a regional chapter. Many in attendance to the meeting on Dec 6th were vocal and supportive of including surrounding states, thus the name......Intermountain Chapter, which received a unanimous vote. It is likely that the majority of events will be held within the Utah borders, because we have the highest concentration of NAXJA Members, but I'm hoping to explore other good places to wheel in the surrounding states......and who better to guide us to these areas, but a NAXJA member from that state? We can also provide a show of force regarding land closures, trail cleanups and other events in the surrounding states on a case by case basis.
If this issue needs to be discussed further, let's plan on drilling down on it at our upcoming Chapter meeting on Jan 17th.

Excerpt taken from the upcoming NAXJA newsletter, regarding the Intermountain Chapter boundaries:
I have to agree with Jeff. We'll have people here in Utah that won't attend monthly meetings or events.
Let's leave it up to the people themselves if they want to travel 5 hours to attend an event or meeting. I know members right here in Utah that didn't attend the 20th Anniversary event in Moab.
As Jeff stated there are a lot of excellant wheelin' to be had in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Nevada and New Mexico. If we have some members from those areas in our Chapter it would be beneficial to us to set up some events/rides/campouts etc.
I believe this should be a topic for discussion at our next meeting.
Now, I'll step off my soapbox.

Hello Jeff (XJEEPER),
Shelly and I would very much like to be members of the IMC of NAXJA. It would be hard for us to make meetings, but Utah is definitely not to far for us to participate in events. And for that matter, living in northern Arizona, (PAYSON), we can offer alot in possible trail events here in our area. For those of you that are not familar with our area here in Payson Arizona, it is in the mountains, ponderosa pines and many year round rivers. We have some pretty challenging trails here, and not to mention some great scenery. Shelly and I have been members since FF'99 in Ouary Colorado and would be proud to be members in your IMC of NAXJA. Please let us know if this is a possibility.
Thanks,

I'd suggest a place to wheel and meet but it's pretty dang cold to hold a meet outside.

I'll probably miss the meeting as a 2.5 hour drive for lunch probably won't go over that great with the new job and all. I'd hope to know my way around some parts of the Uinta basin by late spring and would be glad to host a trail run/campout type of thing. I'll let you guys know of my 'hosting' abilities (maybe I should be looking at farms with some acreage for a new house.....:D ) as soon as my house in West Jordan sells and we get something out here.
