if you have 2Hi-4Hi-N-4Lo, it's a 231. If you have 2Hi-4x4Part Time-4x4Full Time-N-4Lo, or something similar, it's a 242.

Hey, I'll start a fresh thread for this but the thread title caught my eye... Here's some transfer cse info I've been trying to get people to help out with.
Trying to make it easy to id XJ applicable 'out of vehicle' boneyard tranny & xfer cases ( primarily for correct spline count ):
