OK, sorry to bring this up again, but it's driving me crazy. My first post is here....

So I pulled the front DS, and the whine was all gone. I had a feeling the whine was coming from the center pin in the cardan joint. So, I "borrowed" a DS out of another XJ, and the good ole whine is back.
What is left, it has to be the front T-Case output right? That is the only thing not spinning with the front DS out correct?
As always, everyone's help is greatly appreciated.

what about the front axle output?

the front axle output would spin with the diff., regardless of if the DS is in or not, as far as i know. This is because it's a non-disco axle.

its amazing how sounds seem to be coming from one thing but they really are somewhere else when you have lots of metal around. just keep that in mind;)

Take the driveshaft out again and shift into high four wheel drive and see if the whine comes back. If it does its prolly the front out put on the t-case, if not its prolly the front Diff.
Just my $.02.

good idea MARK, the only thing is, is that it only whines after it gets warm. I guess I'll have to warm it up with the DS in, then yank it, then try the 4 hi thing. Good idea thanks!
Still open to other opinions if anyone has run into this.
