Can roller fairleads be welded on?

I have a MM #10500 winch that is going on the XJ. I'm mounting it using a Warn Trans4mer setup. The MM winch doesnt leave enough room for the fairlead to be bolted on properly, or bolted on period. So here is my question:

Can I weld the fairlead onto the winch mount, and will it be as safe as bolting it on?

Thanks for the help.

Can you grind a little off the winch to allow the bolts for the fairlead or use flat socket head cap screws?

Well, I won't be doing the welding, as I am a proud member of the BWA...booger welders association.

Here are a few pics to show you what I am working with:

This a good pic so you can see the clearance I am working with:

The part that would be welded is just the two side of the fairlead that contact the mount:

And here is the overall setup, with wiinch mounted, so you can see the system:

Again, I appreciate the input, and ideas.

If I was in that spot, I think I would consider welding a couple of plates on to the ends of the fairlead bracket (maybe reinforcing it with a top plate) and bolt that to the bumper. There's no strength advantage or disadvantage that I can see between that and welding it to the bumper, but bolting it up makes it removeable.

Cut the heads off a couple of bolts and make studs for it. You could insert them almost all the way through the bumper and plug weld them in place. Then tack wald the fairlead to the bumper. That way if you ever want to take it off, you only have to grind the tack welds and un bolt it.

Just a thought,

I was in the same EXACT predicament as you Fergie. I did something similar to what Dan was suggesting, except I left the bolt head on so I could get a little better weld on the bolt. Then I just put the nuts on the frontside of the fairlead. Only problem with doing that is the fairlead is spaced out from the bumper the thickness of the bolt head. For me that wasn't a big deal, plus I was using a Hawse fairlead and not a roller.

Here are some pics before I mounted the fairlead...... not that they help with anything :D

Here's a pic after I mounted the fairlead, you can sorta see it. Eventhough you can't really see it, the fairlead does sit out from the bumper face about 1/4".

Have you got enough room for carriage bolts?

Thanks for the input gentelmen. I like the beveling idea, and the stud one too.

RCP- I don't think I have enough room for a carriage bolt.

Thanks again.
