Body Panel Thickness

I'm wondering if anyone out there knows what gauge the body panels are on a 1994 XJ. I want to do some fender trimming along with a little welding to close up the gaps. No knowing much about welding I'm looking at a MIG welder that will work with 24 gauge steel; will this work on the rear wheel wells?

Looks like you stumped the band on this one.

Figure about 20 gage on the body sheetmetal. If you're in the market for a wirefeed welder, do yourself a favor and get a name brand such as Lincoln or Miller. If you haven't done any welding before, get someone who has to assist with re-joining the rear panel to the wheel house. That area contributes to chassis stiffenss so you don't want to take matters lightly.
