We're running JV again the weekend before Thanksgiving, which is Nov 21-23. It looks like I have Friday off, so if you guys want to run on Friday I'll run with you.
Minimum equipment is 33" tires and two lockers, no 260x axle joints, no D35's. If you have 35" tires, no stock steering. Front axle joints should be snap ringed, not c-clipped.
Who's going? :D :D

The machine shop is jacking me, so the new rig won't be ready.
On the bright side, I'm getting my old turbo diesel back from our factory, so I can tow my old junk down there, if need be.
I'm 50/50 right now, depends on when the in-laws get here from Ohio.

Learned the secret of getting out of town at any time you wish with permission from your wife.
Just become an annoying a--hole for a period of time prior to you wanting to go somewhere and they will be so glad when you say your going out with the guys doing whatever your planning to do. expect that they will go shopping while your gone and then take them out for a nice dinner when you get home. Has worked for me for 30 years.
Oh and being messy around the house does help also. They can't wait to be able to cleanup the house and see it clean for a couple of days until you get home.
It's the secret of marriage and Freedom.

I think I'm already banished from the house until the new back patio, and gutters are in.
It's just me and the cat in the garage until the projects are done.
Cage in progress pics after this weekend........maybe. I've got to take it all back apart to measure it up carefully. URF needs to get a good group of measured drawings. (it's all tacked together for the moment, and I need to bend up the roof halo)

So what should be the big Saturday run this year? We haven't run Sunbonnet Pass for awhile. Who's going to be there on Friday? Should we do Outer Limits, or run something shorter and do another Friday night run? Clawhammer would make a good night run either Friday or Saturday. Since the front half of Jackhammer is spooky in reverse (at the top), we could run the back of Jack backwards and then run the bottom of Sledge backwards.....that would be fun trail.
I'm thinking Upper Big Johnson and Outer Limits should be on the list for BOTW. The other thing we could do for BOTW is to try to run them all!! :D

I'll be there and ready to get it awn Friday morning! All I know is I need a dose of OL, maybe Saturday? I haven't done Sunbonnet Pass or Clawhammer so I'd be up for that. I know Porch Puppy hasn't done OL or Sledge and he'd be up for both of those I imagine. I also know of this little trail, should take us 45 minutes or so. ;)

Are you still working on the front axle project, or something else?
David Taylor
October 25th, 2003, 09:53
I'm still working on the front end. I'm doing the gears and ARB today. I still need to finish the mounts, build steering, make a new track bar and put it in. Plus I need a new set of 5 on 5.5 wheels,
pull the rear shafts and press the studs in the bigger pattern.
The 30 is still in there so I could bring it the way it is. I just don't whant to brake somthing on it now that it's ready to come out.

October 25th, 2003, 10:24

Thursday nite also if theres enough of you there for a Friday run.
I don't necessarily want to spend alot of time cooking this time if you guys don't mind, but I could bring the big stove if someone else wants to cook or I can bring the big pot and make chili the easy way if everyone wants.
I like the potluck idea only if we know we will be in camp at a decent hour.
I don't think I'll change the doors or back hatch quiet yet if we are going to do OL.
I want to really spend the time wheeling on this trip with you guys.

Mil, you've done enough cooking for us in the past and it's appriciated.
I think we should do the pot luck deal on Friday night, they have always worked well in the past and we've always had an ample amount of good eats.
I'll once again bring fresh chips and salsa, carnitas, beans, and tortillias. Also, the Margaritas will be flowing, without any campground managers to worry about. :D :D

Base camp type of deal. Base camp easy to see from the sand road going into JV, it's just that the road is very easy to miss from the highway. Someone might have GPS coords of the base camp. I know that Richard has posted some pretty foolproof directions from Lucerne valley

Dan, if you're real careful you can make those c-clipped 297's live. Plenty have run with them, it's just that you might be OK and you might get unlucky. Have to remember to try to climb everything straight on, and ease into the throttle. Do you carry spare front shafts? The front LSD isn't a big deal, it just makes it more of a challenge and you may need to winch now and then. If you are running stock steering, do you have a spare drag link and tie rod?
You can go to Mapquest and put in Old Woman Springs Rd and Boone Rd, Johnson Valley, as your destination and it will give you the directions. Basically, you go to Barstow on I15, go south on Barstow Rd (Hwy 247) for about 30 miles to a stop sign, turn left at the stop (still Hwy 247) and go about 22 miles to Boone Rd, which is a dirt road that only goes left. Boone Rd is near the end of a long straight section of road, so if you hit the curve you just missed Boone Rd. The sign is on the right side of the highway, immediately opposite of the dirt road, so it's easy to pass the turn by the time you see the sign.....lots of skid marks on the highway.
Once you make the turn onto the dirt road, go about 3-5 miles and you will come to a four way intersection with most of the tracks clearly going to the left, follow the tracks and turn left, then go a few hundred yards to an open section on the left, which is where we camp. The open section is right before the road drops through a gulley, so if you hit the gulley you just missed the camp spot. If you happen to continue down this road, it ends up at the dry lake bottom where most of the people who use JV camp.
We set up camp in this spot, and then go out from there to wheel. Most of the trails are a short drive from camp. There are no facilities, so it's dry camping, and there is no gas close. I fill up in Barstow and can run a few days, but if I'm running three days, and since we're running Outer Limits which is further from camp, I'll fill up in Lucerne Valley. There are a couple of gas stations close to the stop sign where you turn left on Hwy 247.
Hope you can make it, :D

Good deal.
As with most 4 wheelers in CA, we're all vegetarians. Just bring some alfalfa or tofu.
Pretty much anything goes in JV. But, I think you can leave the firewood up to the local crowd, it's not worth towing a trailer 700 miles.

So is my BBQ needed?? As of right now, Greg (CROK) and I are riding up. So count him in as well. I can't wait to meet everyone, again, this year. Hopefully yall don't mind a college kidd hanging around. Oh, I am not able to get my salmon all prepared in time. So it looks like lots of chicken from me.

Schedule? What schedule........we don't need no stinkin' schedule!
:D
We don't know for sure what we'll run Friday, but we've talked about running Sunbonnet. If we're up for a Friday night run probably Clawhammer. Outer Limits is the consensus for Saturday, and we might not have enough energy left after that for a night run on Saturday. I think Sledgehammer would be good for Sunday.
So, are we doing a potluck on Friday night or Saturday night? Everyone won't be there Friday night, but it would be easier to do a potluck that night because we know we'll be back to camp in time. Running OL with a group on Sat, if we have many problems we'll get back after dark.

Looks like it's going to be pretty cold out there. The high for next weeknd is 61 degrees, the low is 32. Add a little JV wind & it should be down right bitter.

Thankfully, we all drive enclosed rigs. :D
61 is pretty nice during the day, but it could get cold at night. We've never really had bad weather out there, except maybe when it rained on us earlier this year. Even then it was only when we were back in camp.
Are we going to have to listen to Matt's engine running again so he can have the heater on? ;)

We'll be bringing some firewood too. We are going to get there probably around 7:00 or 7:30 PM Friday evening. Don't leave for Claw without me! :D

The motor only starts up if it falls below 20. Either it starts up or I'm crawling into bed & snuggling with Hinkley.
So Jes you want the Cuervo gold or what?

Kids...
Is anybody else bringing kids. I'm debating on whether to bring my ten year old, but this trip is starting to sound like it should be rated R.

I debated bringing mine, but I think this trip will be a little much for a 15-month-old little girl. That's not even considering the rated "R" part.
PS Matt, did I see your Dad on CNN this morning?

Matt,
You've got to start thinking of these trips as learning experiences for your son. Call it diversity training. :D

He was supposed to be on there today. The CNN crew was out a couple weeks ago doing a piece on the cheap wine grapes. His name is Chester Andrew. I haven't seen it yet.

Matt Although I don't really know you, and searching for where I saw it would take a while, I remember seeing somewhere that your last name was Andrew. I saw this morning the story about the grape industry, location was Madera, and the guys name was Chester Andrew. I was just assuming that it was a relation to you.

Friday night looks like a good night for the pot luck, since no one else commented. :D
It ends up that I have to work till 9:00 pm on Thursday. I'll see how I feel, but it would probably be easier for me to just drive out real early Friday morning. If I can leave town before 9:30, I'll do it, otherwise I'll see you guys in the morning.

Any idea what time you guys will be hitting the trail on Saturday? The Hammers are only an hour and a half away from my place. Rabbit and I are planning on coming in my jeep. I've done most of the trails there except OL in my flattie and would like to finish the set.

We'll leave camp Saturday morning no later than 8:00 am. Outer Limits is the furthest trail from camp, plus it's always an all day run.
Are you bringing the flattie or the XJ?

I'll be bringing the XJ. And a good friend of mine will be bringing his flattie if he doesn't wuss out. He's never been to JV but he and his jeep are more than capable, he's just a little psyched out about doing the best trails in the world.
A quick question about Wrecking Ball... I did that in the flattie, way back when they were calling it Rated X, and there was a squeeze that I barely got my flattie through. It still caved both Jerry cans I had on the back. Anyway, how do you guys get the XJs through?
That was a long time ago, maybe the trail has changed some???
Thanks, Dan

Somehow it usually just works out. Wrecking Ball is one of the lesser body damage trials out there. I'd rate Outer Limits & Sun Bonnet (both of which we are running this weekend) much higher on the potential body damage scale.

I would guess:
Fill a consumed mickeys beer bottle 1/4 way with gasoline and place it mouth up on a camp fire and wait till the gasoline is gone.

As usual, I does not look like I'll make it this weekend. I got the "You always go off roading....blah blah blah.... you need to spend more time with ...... blah blah blah ....." when I reminded my wife I was going to JV Saturday. When that happens I'm screwed if I dont do as she wants so maybe next time.
